Kate Edmondson Bridal Couture

Kate Edmondson designs bespoke wedding dresses from an atelier in Acton, West London. She trained with a BA Hons in Fashion Design, has worked in bridal fashion for more than 20 years, and has designed couture dresses since 2000, including time spent working for some of Britain's leading bridal designers.

Each gown is cut to the bride's own measurements and built around a calico toile, which is fitted and adjusted before the final fabric is cut. Lace appliques are sewn by hand, and beadwork and embroidery are added to suit the design. Designing, making and finishing all happen in the West London studio, by Kate and her seamstresses.

The collection is made up of bespoke wedding dresses, bridal separates, bridal tailoring and evening reception dresses, so a bride can plan a whole wedding wardrobe: an engagement or rehearsal look, a civil ceremony outfit, the gown itself and a second dress for the party. Bridal suits and separates are made to measure in four to six weeks, while a full gown usually takes nine to twelve months.

Kate also makes bridal hair accessories and veils in the studio, using traditional millinery techniques, and can make a piece from the same materials as the dress. Her brides have married at London venues and country houses in England, and abroad in France and Italy.

How they work

From the first message to the day itself

  1. 01First consultation

A private appointment of up to one hour at the Acton atelier, with sample dresses in sizes 8 to 12 to try. Kate talks through the bride's style, the wedding and the budget.

  2. 02Booking and sketches

At a second visit the bride confirms the commission, a 50% booking fee is paid, and Kate presents sketches that combine the bride's ideas with her own design.

  3. 03Measurements and pattern

The bride's measurements are taken at the first appointment and used to draft the paper pattern, which is why a settled date for taking them is agreed in advance.

  4. 04Calico toile fittings

A calico mock up of the dress is made, and three to four fittings shape and adjust it. Every change is carried back into the pattern before the silk is cut.

  5. 05Making and final fitting

The gown is cut in the chosen fabrics and sewn, lace and beadwork added, with a further fitting once the shell of the dress is made. Plan nine to twelve months from first appointment to the wedding.

Questions couples ask

Before you write to them

Where is the atelier?

Kate Edmondson Bridal Couture is at 203 to 205 The Vale Business Centre, Unit 15, Acton Vale, London W3 7QS. All appointments are held there, face to face and one to one.

How much does a bespoke wedding dress cost?

Bespoke wedding dresses start at £5,000, and the price depends on the design and fabrics. Bridal separates and tailoring start at £1,650 and bridal hair accessories start at £350.

How long does it take to make a wedding dress?

Expect nine to twelve months from the first appointment, which allows for the toile, adjustments and final fittings. Bridal separates and tailoring take four to six weeks.

How many fittings will I have?

Normally three to four calico fittings, then a further fitting once the shell of the dress is made. Any change that needs extra cutting adds a fitting.

What should I bring to a fitting?

The exact underwear and the same heel height you will wear on the day, because the gown is designed to fit around them.

What if my weight changes before the wedding?

Measurements are taken at the first appointment, so Kate recommends waiting until you are body ready. A deadline for the final measurements is agreed, and an extra charge applies if a large weight change needs significant alterations.

Is the dress refundable?

No. Every dress is made to order to the bride's specification, so it is not refundable. The bride sees design and fabric samples throughout, so there are no surprises.

Can Kate restyle an old or second hand dress?

No. The atelier only works with its own designs.
