Adrian Neal and The Studio Without Walls

The Studio Without Walls is the name Adrian Neal has worked under for more than thirty five years of wedding photography. He lives and works in Ware, Hertfordshire, and most of his diary sits in the South East of England, though he is glad to work anywhere in the UK and travels to the South of France and Italy for destination weddings.

His approach is documentary. He stays at the edges of the room and lets the day happen, with a touch of street photography in how he frames it and a sense of humour in what he chooses to catch. A flower girl in tears, a grandmother lighting a cigarette beside a groomsman, a bride glancing at her own reflection in a round window: none of it is arranged.

“My style is mainly fly on the wall documentary with a little street photography vibe, and I hope a sense of humour too.”

Adrian Neal, Photographer

The look of the work is deliberate. Much of it is black and white, edited for the contrast and grain of film stocks such as Kodak Tri-X, Portra and Gold. Adrian photographed weddings on film for years before moving to digital, and the digital files are still finished to feel like it.

Formal photographs are kept few, relaxed and quick, so that nobody is pulled away from the day for long. Most weddings are covered from the bridal preparations through to the early part of the evening dancing, and half-day bookings are also welcome.

Adrian is a member of Fearless Photographers and an eight-times European Gold Award winner. Masters of Wedding Photography has also named him among the top ten wedding photographers in the UK.

Questions couples ask

Before you write to them

Where is Adrian Neal based?

He lives in Ware, Hertfordshire. Most of his weddings are in the South East of England, he works across the UK, and he travels to the South of France and Italy for destination weddings.

What does documentary photography mean in practice?

The camera follows the day instead of directing it. Adrian works from the edges of the room, and the few posed portraits he takes are brief enough not to interrupt anything.

Why is so much of the work in black and white?

It is a considered choice. The images are edited for the contrast and grain of film stocks such as Kodak Tri-X, Portra and Gold, a look he built up over years of shooting weddings on film.

How many formal photographs should we expect?

Very few. A handful of relaxed shots together, taken quickly, take the place of a long list of set-ups.

How much of the day is covered?

Most weddings run from the bridal preparations to the early part of the evening dancing. A half day can be booked for a shorter celebration.

How many photographs will we receive?

Usually around 350 or more in the final edit, supplied high-resolution and ready to print on a boxed USB stick, with an online gallery for guests.

Can we order albums or prints?

Yes. Albums and prints are available in addition to the USB delivery.

What does a wedding cost?

Fees are set per wedding and are sent in reply to an enquiry through the contact form on his website.

Has the work won any recognition?

Adrian is a member of Fearless Photographers and an eight-times European Gold Award winner, and he has been named in the Masters of Wedding Photography top ten for the UK.

Is video offered as well?

The current offering is photography. His own YouTube channel carries older wedding highlight films, so couples who want film alongside the stills should ask him what is possible.
