About Clearwell Castle

Clearwell Castle is a Grade II* listed Georgian Gothic Revival castle in the Forest of Dean, taken for one wedding a day, with fifteen bedrooms for the wedding party.

Clearwell Castle stands in the Forest of Dean, in the village of Clearwell near the Wye Valley. Building began in 1727 for Thomas Wyndham, to designs by Roger Morris, and the result is the earliest Georgian Gothic Revival castle in England. Towers, pointed arches and leaded windows give it a fortress profile, and it is Grade II* listed. The family-run house belongs to the Country House Weddings group and takes one wedding a day, so the castle and its 20 acres are given over to a single party.

Ceremonies are held in the Ballroom, along a 75-foot aisle beneath lancet windows, or outdoors at the garden Bandstand. The wedding breakfast for up to 150 is served in the Ballroom by the castle's own kitchen, and the evening party, for up to 250, moves to the cellar bar. Fifteen bedrooms sleep up to 34 in the castle, and The Wyndham, a short walk away, adds 24 more. Bristol, Cheltenham and Gloucester are each about 45 minutes by road.

A Georgian Gothic castle in the forest

Clearwell was begun in 1727 for Thomas Wyndham, with Roger Morris as architect. Its towers, pointed arches and leaded windows make it the earliest Georgian Gothic Revival castle in England, more than twenty years ahead of Strawberry Hill. It is Grade II* listed and stands among the trees of the Forest of Dean.

Vows in the Ballroom or the garden

The Ballroom has a 75-foot aisle, hardwood floors, leaded lancet windows and a raised dais where the register is signed. Couples who prefer the open air marry at the garden Bandstand among the flower beds, with the castle rising behind. Twenty acres of grounds, a cocktail terrace and a croquet lawn are there for the hours that follow.

Dinner under the chandeliers

The castle's own kitchen serves seasonal modern British wedding breakfasts for up to 150 in the Ballroom, with canapés on the cocktail terrace beforehand. The evening moves down to the cellar bar and its dancefloor, where the party can reach 250 guests.
