Marrying in Venice and the Veneto

The Veneto is architecturally the most coherent region in northern Italy. Palladio built here: the Villa Rotonda, Villa Barbaro, Villa Emo. The Venetian Republic left its walls, governors' palaces, and civic iconography across every town from Verona to Belluno. This is not a destination that requires justification. The buildings speak for themselves.

Venice is the most famous part of the region and has its own guide. The Veneto proper is something different: rolling hills, ancient walled cities, and a wine landscape of extraordinary beauty. Verona's Arena, Vicenza's Olympic Theatre, the prosecco terraces of Conegliano. Each has its own distinct character, and each is within an hour of the others.

The Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. The vine-covered terraces and estate hotels in the hills above Treviso are among the most beautiful wedding landscapes in northern Italy, and among the least competed for. Couples who choose the Veneto over Tuscany do so because they prefer something less expected.

Best months
May, June, September
Shoulder season
April, October
Peak season
July, August

The Veneto has a continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold winters. Early June and September offer the best conditions for outdoor events. The Prosecco harvest in late September adds extraordinary colour to vineyard weddings. October is still warm enough for garden ceremonies and is the quietest month for premium venue availability.

What venues are like

Counted The Venice and the Veneto venues by kind, counted from the venue records when this page loaded.

Palladian villa

The defining Veneto venue. Symmetrical facade, central temple portico, piano nobile above the basement. Palladio's architectural legacy makes the Veneto unique in the world. Several original Palladian properties are licensed for civil ceremonies and private receptions. Your planner will advise on current availability.

Medieval castello

Fortified medieval estates throughout the province. Castello di Roncade near Treviso is a working winery inside a complete castle complex with defensive towers and formal gardens. More theatrical and less refined than villa properties but architecturally exceptional. For couples who want drama over elegance.

Wine estate

In Valpolicella, Soave, and the Prosecco Hills. Working wine estates with converted farmhouse accommodation and cellar spaces. Typically 20 to 80 guests for a full buyout. The food and wine at table are the strongest argument for the region: Amarone, Soave, Prosecco, and Asiago are all made here.

Walled city palazzo

In Verona, Vicenza, and Treviso. Enclosed cortile courtyards, restored frescoed rooms, and Baroque facades. Suited to couples who want an urban setting with direct access to restaurant culture and architectural walking distance. More available in midweek and shoulder season than weekend peak dates.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Venice (VCE) The main international gateway. 30 to 60 minutes to most Veneto venues depending on location. Direct long-haul routes from New York, Dubai, and major European hubs. Water taxi from arrivals to central Venice available for guests extending their trip.
  • Verona (VRN) The most convenient airport for Verona and Valpolicella weddings. European-only routes. 20 minutes to Verona city, 30 to 50 minutes to Valpolicella venues. For most European guests this is the preferred option.

The Veneto has excellent road infrastructure throughout. Most venues outside Venice are accessible by private transfer without complexity. The A4 motorway runs the full east-west length of the region, connecting Bergamo, Verona, Vicenza, Padua, and Venice in a single axis.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

  3. 3

    Birth certificates

The original, with an apostille, and an official Italian translation that carries its own apostille.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

The Veneto is one of the most varied regions in Italy for wedding accommodation, from the Palladian villas of the Brenta Riviera and Vicenza to the Prosecco hills northeast of Treviso and the approaches to Venice itself.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Veneto cooking ranges from the cicchetti and seafood of Venice to the wine-country traditions of Valpolicella and the Prosecco hills, making it one of the most regionally diverse food cultures in northern Italy.

Bigoli in Salsa

Thick wholemeal spaghetti dressed with a slow-cooked sauce of onions and salt-cured sardines; a lean Venetian dish traditionally eaten on days of abstinence, now served as a starter at both humble and refined restaurants.

Risi e Bisi

A thick, soupy rice and pea dish that sits between a risotto and a minestra; the official dish of the Doge's banquet for San Marco's Day on 25 April, made in Venice with fresh spring peas and aged Parmigiano.

Baccalà alla Vicentina

Salt cod braised very slowly in milk with onions, anchovies, and Parmigiano until the sauce becomes creamy; the definitive dish of Vicenza, served on polenta and the subject of competing family recipes across the province.

Prosecco Superiore di Valdobbiadene

The prestige tier of Prosecco, made in the steep original zone above Treviso; Cartizze, the single grand cru hilltop, produces a richer, fruitier Prosecco and is the correct choice for a wedding toast among those who know the appellation.

Need to know5 Star view

What planners tell couples

Venice Marco Polo Airport

Marco Polo (VCE) is the region's primary international airport, 13 km north of Venice; water bus (Alilaguna) and private water taxi serve the city directly, while hire cars and coaches serve the mainland venues. For Prosecco hill venues, a car is essential as the estates are not served by public transport.

Palladio Villa Permits

Several working Palladian villas in the Veneto hills are available for exclusive-hire events but are also heritage-listed; permits from the Soprintendenza Archeologia may be required for marquees, temporary structures, or events of more than a certain guest count. Your venue coordinator should handle this but confirm early.

Acqua Alta in Venice

High water (acqua alta) floods the lower parts of Venice unpredictably from October to March; if the wedding itinerary includes a Venice visit or lagoon ceremony, have a contingency plan and ensure guests have appropriate footwear. The MOSE flood barrier is now operational and reduces but does not eliminate events.

Prosecco Hills Driving

The Conegliano-Valdobbiadene UNESCO zone is a genuine rural landscape of narrow lanes between vineyards; GPS routing can suggest unsuitable tracks. Hire a local driver or planner familiar with the zone for any estate visits involving multiple stops, particularly if wine tasting is part of the programme.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Venice and the Veneto

Can we hold a legal civil ceremony in a Palladian villa?

Several Palladian villas hold civil ceremony licences from the Comune di Vicenza and surrounding municipalities. Availability is limited and requires coordination with the registrar. A local wedding planner with established municipal relationships is essential.

How does the Veneto compare to Tuscany as a wedding destination?

The Veneto has a smaller international profile, which translates directly into better value, more date availability, and greater vendor attention. The architectural quality in the Palladian heartland exceeds what most Tuscan farmhouses can offer. Couples who want something genuinely distinctive, at a fair price, are increasingly choosing the Veneto.

Is it possible to combine a Veneto villa wedding with Venice?

Yes, and many couples do this well. A 2 to 3 night Venice pre-wedding extension or post-wedding honeymoon is easily added to a Veneto estate itinerary. Venice Marco Polo airport serves both. Your planner can coordinate estate logistics and Venice accommodation as a single package.

What is the Prosecco Hills UNESCO site and does it affect weddings?

The UNESCO designation protects the landscape and restricts new construction but does not affect private events at existing properties. Wedding venues within the UNESCO zone operate normally. The designation has increased attention on the area, which has in turn improved the quality of hospitality in the surrounding estate hotels.

Are there English-speaking wedding professionals in the Veneto?

Yes. Verona and Treviso both have established communities of internationally experienced wedding planners, photographers, and caterers. The Veneto is a mature enough market that English-language coordination is standard at the premium end.

Do British guests need a visa for Italy?

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area.
