Marrying in Lake Como

Lake Como is the most architecturally concentrated wedding destination in Europe. Within a thirty-kilometre stretch of water, there are more historic villas, private gardens, and grand hotel terraces than anywhere else on the continent. The result is a competitive market, high prices, and a standard of setting that is very difficult to find anywhere else.

The lake divides into three branches at Bellagio. The southern basin is broad and accessible from Milan. The northern arms narrow into the pre-Alpine landscape. Each branch has a distinct character: the western shore is defined by grand villa hotels and Belle Epoque gardens; the eastern shore is quieter, more residential, more intimate. Both are within the same theatrical frame of mountains and water.

Lake Como weddings operate at the very top of the Italian market on price and logistics. Road access around the lake is narrow and slow, particularly in summer. Most wedding parties arrive by water taxi or private boat, which becomes part of the event itself. Venues are small by Italian standards: intimate scale and architectural quality are the trade, not size and capacity.

Peak season
July and August

September is the preferred month among Como planners. The lake is warm enough to swim, the summer tourist volume has dropped, and the light in the morning has a clarity that is particular to this time of year. July and August are extremely crowded on the lake roads and water taxis book weeks in advance. May brings lush gardens and long days but some years have unsettled weather.

Also in Lake Como

Tremezzo & the western shore

The most iconic stretch. Villa Carlotta, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo, and a sequence of private villas with stepped garden terraces. The light here faces east across the lake toward Bellagio. High demand, very limited availability at the premium tier.

Bellagio

The point where the three arms of the lake meet. The most photographed location on Como. Narrow streets, terraced gardens, and a handful of exclusive private properties. Access is by boat only for most guests. Suits couples who want complete privacy and theatre.

Varenna & the eastern shore

Quieter than Tremezzo, with a different quality of light. Smaller village scale, fewer tourists, and some exceptional private villa properties that do not appear in mainstream directories. Preferred by couples who have researched beyond the obvious.

Como town surrounds

The southern basin, closest to Malpensa airport and the Milan motorway. More accessible for large guest counts. The architectural quality is lower than the mid-lake positions but the logistics are significantly more manageable.

Kinds of venue5 Star view

What venues are like

Historic villa

The definitive Como wedding setting. Private villas built for Italian and European nobility from the 16th to 19th century. Formal gardens, boathouses, terraced lawns, and lake frontage. Most accommodate 30 to 80 guests for a ceremony and reception. On-site accommodation is limited, which means most guests stay nearby and arrive by water.

Grand hotel

Several Como hotels operate as de facto wedding venues, offering private use of their terraces, gardens, and ballrooms for exclusive events. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo and Villa d'Este are the most famous. Capacity is higher than a private villa. Costs reflect the hotel's own room rates plus private hire fees.

Private palazzo

Historic residential palaces, some still family-owned, that open for exclusive wedding hire. More intimate than a hotel, more practical than a villa. Often includes accommodation in the palazzo itself for the immediate wedding party.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Milan Malpensa (MXP) The primary gateway. 50 to 70 minutes from the southern lake by road. Direct routes from North America, the Middle East, and all major European hubs.
  • Milan Linate (LIN) City airport, 60 to 80 minutes from Como by road or rail. Better for guests arriving from short-haul European routes.
  • Bergamo (BGY) Low-cost carrier hub 60 minutes from Como. Useful for guests flying with Ryanair and Wizz from UK regional airports.

Lake Como's road network is one of the slowest in northern Italy. The SS340 along the western shore can take 90 minutes to cover 25 kilometres in summer traffic. Water taxi transfers are the correct solution for most wedding parties. Most venues have private jetties.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

  3. 3
    Before you travel

    Birth certificates

The original, with an apostille, and an official Italian translation that carries its own apostille.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Where guests stay5 Star view

Accommodation

Lake Como has a compact but exceptional luxury hotel supply concentrated on the western shore between Cernobbio and Lenno; private villa estates provide an alternative for full buyout stays.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Lake Como's food culture combines Lombard and pre-Alpine traditions: freshwater fish from the lake, bresaola from Valtellina, and the wines of Franciacorta within 90 minutes drive.

Lavarello and missoltino

Lavarello (coregone) is the most prized fish from the lake, served grilled or in carpaccio at lakeside restaurants. Missoltino are pressed and dried agone fish, a Como specialty eaten with polenta and local butter. Both are on the menu at Ristorante Silvio in Bellagio.

Risotto con pesce persico

Saffron or butter risotto with perch fillets, the essential Como first course. The combination of lake fish with short-grain rice and local Grana Padano is completely specific to this area. Order it at Locanda dell'Isola Comacina on Comacina Island.

Locanda dell'Isola Comacina

Reached by boat from Ossuccio, this restaurant on Como's only island has served a fixed menu, by candlelight, to one sitting per evening since 1947. The ritual includes a symbolic burning at the end of the meal. Unaltered and unlike anything else on the lake.

Pasticceria Monti, Como

The best pasticceria in Como city, on Via Boldoni. Mattia Monti produces some of northern Italy's finest pastry. Worth a morning stop for couples and guests based in the southern lake area before a full wedding day.

Need to know5 Star view

What planners tell couples

Water taxi logistics are central to the day

The lake road (SS340) is notoriously slow in summer. Most premium venues have private jetties and assume guests will arrive by boat. Book private water taxis for the wedding party and coordinate guest transfers by boat rather than road wherever possible. In July and August, water taxis book out weeks in advance: reserve through your planner early.

Villa del Balbianello FAI booking

Balbianello is owned and managed by the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano) and is licensed for civil ceremonies. FAI allocates a limited number of wedding dates per season and manages the booking directly. Enquire 18 to 24 months ahead. Your planner must have a working relationship with FAI to navigate the process.

Noise ordinances at lake venues

Most lakeside municipalities enforce noise cutoffs between midnight and 1am. Cliff and water acoustics amplify sound further than expected. Many venues apply self-imposed earlier cutoffs. Confirm the specific terms with your chosen venue and plan the entertainment schedule accordingly.

September is the consensus peak month

June is excellent for long light and garden colour. July and August are crowded and the road situation becomes difficult. September is when Como is at its best: tourist pressure drops, the lake water is still warm, and the morning light across the water has a quality that is specific to that month. Most experienced Como planners book their own weddings in September.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Lake Como

Why is Lake Como so expensive for weddings?

Supply is severely constrained. The lake has a finite number of waterfront properties, most of which are privately owned and not available for events. Those that do open for weddings command prices that reflect both their rarity and the global demand for the setting. Logistics costs are also higher than elsewhere in Italy: water taxis, boat transfers, and the premium attached to accessing a congested lake in peak season all add to the total.

What is the best time of year for a Lake Como wedding?

September is the consensus choice among experienced planners. The tourist season is thinning, the roads are more manageable, temperatures are comfortable for outdoor ceremonies, and the lake light in September has a quality that is genuinely difficult to describe in photographs. May and June offer lush garden colour and longer days. July and August are crowded and hot but sunset ceremonies work well.

How do guests travel around the lake during a wedding?

By water. The lake roads are narrow and notoriously slow in summer. Private water taxis, small ferries, and chartered boats are the standard transport solution for wedding parties. Most premium venues have private jetties. A well-organised water taxi schedule is as important to a Como wedding as any other logistical element.

How far in advance do I need to book a Lake Como venue?

The most sought venues book 24 to 36 months in advance for June, July, and September dates. If you have a specific property in mind, enquire immediately regardless of when your wedding is. For couples who are flexible on the property, comparable venues are usually available 12 to 18 months out.

Which airport is best for Lake Como?

Milan Malpensa (MXP) is the primary gateway for long-haul and most European routes. It is 50 to 70 minutes from the southern lake by road or direct transfer. Guests arriving from UK regional airports often find Bergamo (BGY) convenient due to its low-cost carrier routes. Milan Linate (LIN) is better for short-haul European guests who prefer a city-centre airport.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in Italy?

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court.
