Marianne Johnson and Sweet Pea Floral Design

Marianne Johnson trained under Jane Packer and then spent years with some of London's best known florists, working on luxury events and celebrity weddings, before opening Sweet Pea Floral Design in Hackney in 2008. She remains closely involved in each wedding, from the first meeting through to the day itself.

The studio's look is relaxed but considered. Arrangements are often asymmetric, with stems set back into the display and foliage trailing for movement, and the flowers are chosen by hand at the market early in the week of the wedding. British growers supply the blooms wherever possible, and white, blush and nude tones are the most requested palette.

“We take the time to understand every aspect of the day.”

Sweet Pea Floral Design

The work covers bridal and bridesmaid bouquets, buttonholes, ceremony arches and aisle displays, floor-standing urns, floral staircases, foliage walls, mantelpieces, hanging pieces and reception tables. The team has dressed Claridge's, The Ned, The Lanesborough, 10-11 Carlton House Terrace, Temple, St Paul's Cathedral, Syon Park and Kew Gardens, and Gaynes Park in Essex.

The studio has been named among Harper's Bazaar's Top 10 Wedding Florists and the Telegraph's 20 Most Creative Florists, and has appeared in Condé Nast Brides, Hello and You & Your Wedding. Waste flowers and plants go to Flower Angels, and packaging is recycled.

How they work

From the first message to the day itself

  1. 01Consultation

A first conversation about the day and the venue, so the design starts from the setting and the couple.

  2. 02Design concepts

Sketches and sampled flowers are prepared before anything is booked.

  3. 03Market selection

In the days before the wedding the team visits the market early and picks every stem by hand.

  4. 04Installation

The studio team installs everything on site, from the bridal bouquet to the last table, and checks it in person.
