Georgian house on a 543-acre estate · Welwyn, Hertfordshire
An 18th century stately home near Welwyn with three wedding locations on one Hertfordshire estate, set around Broadwater Lake and Paine Bridge
Brocket Hall is an 18th century stately home in Hertfordshire parkland near Welwyn, and a listed building. The estate landscape was designed by Richard Woods, and Broadwater Lake and Paine Bridge feature in wedding photographs. The Hall has been home to two prime ministers and has played host to George IV and Queen Victoria, and Lady Caroline Lamb introduced the Waltz to England in its Ballroom. Inside, couples are surrounded by original oil paintings, and the Ballroom has a ceiling painted by Sir Francis Wheatley. The estate also has a golf course and a clubhouse at The Melbourne Club,.
The Hall, the Oak Room at The Melbourne Club and Auberge du Lac, the lakeside former hunting lodge, are the three locations for a wedding on the estate. Each suits a different scale of celebration and a different guest list. The Oak Room stands on the banks of Broadwater Lake, beside the estate's golf course. Brocket Hall is a licensed wedding venue, it can be taken for exclusive use, and a bar is on site. Melbourne Lodge, the former stable block, sheltered the horses that took the Hall's residents hunting and was the main point of interest on race days, on the private racecourse that circled the estate in the 18th century.

The estate has an indoor ceremony setting and an outdoor ceremony setting, and a ceremony takes up to 150 guests. The Hall, the Oak Room and Auberge du Lac are the three locations the estate offers for a wedding, and the choice between them decides the setting for the vows.

The Ballroom is used for the wedding breakfast, and the Hall also has dining and function rooms. The Oak Room at The Melbourne Club is an oak-beamed room with views and private dining facilities. The Piano Lounge suits a more intimate wedding. For larger guest lists, couples may hire the grounds and arrange their own marquee through an external supplier. The estate works with several marquee partners who supply everything from the marquee to flooring, dance floors, bars, lighting, tables and chairs.

Brocket Hall has 30 bedrooms, including eight feature suites, each furnished with period furniture. Melbourne Lodge is a Grade I listed Georgian coach house conversion, and its ensuite bedrooms are each named after one of the great racehorses of the day. They are in traditional country house style with modern conveniences, and look across to the Hall, Broadwater Lake and The Melbourne Club golf course. The estate accommodates up to 88 guests.

Catering is in house, and the estate has its own chefs. Auberge du Lac is the waterside restaurant in the estate's historic former hunting lodge, with a terrace, and it is offered on an exclusive-use basis for a wedding. Its menus include an a la carte menu, a set weekly lunch menu, a seven-course tasting menu and a Sunday lunch menu. Every diner starts with a Welcome Snack, and wherever possible everything is made on site, including the bread and butter.
