Marrying in the Fujairah & East Coast
Fujairah is the only emirate of the UAE without a coastline on the Arabian Gulf. It faces east onto the Gulf of Oman, and its shore runs along the foot of the Hajar Mountains. The view from the beaches at Al Aqah, where the main hotels stand, is the most striking coastal scenery in the UAE.
A beach resort on a small promontory with sea on three sides anchored the destination. Weddings here feel quieter and less produced than in Dubai, with smaller properties and a natural setting.
The road from Dubai crosses the Hajar Mountains through a pass, and the scenery shifts from flat desert to mountain gorge to the blue of the Oman coast. For guests from Dubai the drive is part of the experience.

- Best months
- November, December, January, February, March
- Shoulder season
- October, March, April
- Peak season
- December, January, February
The east coast is a little milder than the Gulf coast. In July and August, sea influence brings slightly lower peak temperatures than Dubai but higher humidity, and the winter season runs a little longer into April. March is a strong month: the sea is still warm, the mountains are at their greenest after winter rain, and visitor numbers are lower than in January.
Daylight and sunset
The bar runs from sunrise to sunset on the 15th of each month. A ceremony is usually timed an hour or two before the sunset shown.

The areas of the Fujairah & East Coast
Al Aqah Beach
The main hotel and beach zone. One resort stands on the promontory and the other two sit on the beach strip beside it, with a wall of red and grey rock rising right behind.
Dibba and the far north
A small port town with a traditional character, beyond which the coast can be reached only by boat. Fjord-like inlets, untouched beaches and clear water make a dhow charter from Dibba harbour a memorable outing.
Fujairah City and old fort
The capital, with a sixteenth-century fort on a rocky rise above the old town. A half-day there gives guests cultural context beyond the beach.
Hajar Mountain interior
Wadi Wurayah, a national park with freshwater pools and waterfalls, is one of the few freshwater ecosystems in the UAE. The Masafi village market on the pass road sells carpets, handicrafts and fresh produce.
What venues are like
Mountain and sea ceremony
The defining image of a Fujairah wedding: the Hajar Mountains rising straight from the beach, the Gulf of Oman beyond. The contrast of escarpment and deep blue water is the central picture.
Beach reception
Al Aqah beach hosts most receptions, with tables on the sand, a temporary bar and lighting that works with the mountains. Sunset falls over the mountains, not the sea, and the rock turns red and ochre before dark.
Dhow charter
A wooden dhow chartered from Dibba harbour for a sunset cruise runs between the mountains and the sea.
Mountain lodge and wadi event
Specialist companies run mobile set-ups in the mountains: tented dining in a dry riverbed, fire pits and a traditional Arabic welcome. Coach transport is needed, so these suit pre-wedding dinners or small ceremony elements.
Airports and transfers
- Dubai International (DXB) The standard gateway for UK guests, with direct flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The road to Al Aqah crosses the Hajar Mountains.
- Al Maktoum International (DWC)
- Zayed International (Abu Dhabi) (AUH)
- Ras Al Khaimah International (RKT)
Fujairah is a road transfer from Dubai airport. No regular direct flights from the UK serve Fujairah itself, so Dubai is the standard gateway.
Marrying legally in the United Arab Emirates
A visiting couple marries in a civil ceremony at the Civil Family Court of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department. Neither partner needs to live in the Emirates, the application can be made online, and the ceremony itself takes about fifteen minutes. Dubai's civil marriage service is built for residents of Dubai, so the celebration is usually held in Dubai or elsewhere after the legal ceremony in Abu Dhabi.
- 1Before you travel
The documents
The passport of each partner, and evidence of divorce or the former spouse's death certificate where either applies. A British national may be asked for an affidavit or affirmation of marital status, which the British Embassy in Abu Dhabi or the British Consulate in Dubai issues by appointment.

The application
Made on the Judicial Department's website, through an approved typing centre or through an approved law firm. A standard application takes up to ten working days and an urgent one is available.

Already married at home?5 Star view
Many couples complete the legal marriage at home or at the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court and hold the celebration in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah or elsewhere in the Emirates. A celebration with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner confirm what the setting allows.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens are issued a visa on arrival and need not apply in advance. The United Arab Emirates raised the stay for American passport holders to 90 days in any 180-day period from September 2024; the passport must be valid for at least six months from arrival.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders are given a visitor visa free of charge on arrival and need not apply in advance. It allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and the passport must be valid for at least six months after the day you arrive.
Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need no visa and no sponsor to enter the United Arab Emirates; a passport or a national identity card is accepted at the border. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.
Other nationalities
Many nationalities are issued a visa on arrival and others need an entry permit arranged before travel. Check the Immigration and Citizenship Authority's list or the Emirates' embassy in your country.
The visitor visa covers a wedding trip. A visiting couple does not need a residence permit to marry in Abu Dhabi.

Accommodation
The three Al Aqah beach hotels provide almost all the wedding-quality accommodation on this coast, at costs well below Dubai.
At the table
The food culture reflects a fishing tradition, with fresh catch from the Gulf of Oman on hotel menus. The cooking is good without reaching the celebrity-chef level of Dubai.
Fresh seafood
Kingfish, cobia, barracuda and snapper are regular catches. A beach grill for the wedding dinner, with the day's catch cooked over an open fire, belongs to this coast.
Masafi mountain produce
The Masafi market is known for fresh vegetables, herbs and handicrafts.
Hotel dining
The promontory resort has several outlets, including a rooftop restaurant with mountain and sea views.
Alcohol and halal
Alcohol is served only at licensed hotel venues, as elsewhere in the UAE. Halal food is standard, and dietary needs are handled competently.
What planners tell couples
The mountain drive
The road through the Hajar pass is fully paved and well kept, but climbs and drops considerably. Guests sensitive to mountain roads should be briefed.
Marine conservation
The reef at Snoopy Island and the surrounding waters are a protected marine area. Guests should not touch coral or disturb sea life, and the hotel dive centre briefs all participants.
Alcohol and dress
Alcohol is for licensed venues only, with none in public areas outside hotel grounds. Resort wear suits the beaches, while modest dress is expected in Fujairah city and at the fort, where the local character is a little more conservative than Dubai.
Legal ceremony
Non-Muslim foreign nationals can marry in the UAE at licensed venues. Most couples complete the legal marriage in the UK, and a planner handles the paperwork.
Ramadan
Hotels continue licensed service in enclosed areas. The mountain pass and the Masafi market are public spaces where daylight eating and drinking rules apply.
