Getting Married in Istria
Venetian hill towns, vineyard estates and truffle forest on Croatia's northern peninsula. Istria is the large triangular peninsula at the northern tip of Croatia, bordered by Slovenia, the Gulf of Trieste and the Kvarner Gulf. It speaks Croatian and Italian, builds in Venetian stone, cooks in the Italian tradition and makes wine with European ambition.

Where to marry
Where to Get Married in Istria
Rovinj
A Venetian settlement on a peninsula, with seafront hotels in the pine-forested Monte Mulini park south of the old town. The old town is pedestrian-only, and the offshore islands of Sveta Katarina and Crveni Otok are a short boat ride from the harbour, giving more event and photography locations.
Poreč
The largest tourist town on the coast, built round the UNESCO-listed Euphrasian Basilica. For a wedding it serves best as a guest base and excursion.
Pula and the south
The regional capital has the Arena, a first-century Roman amphitheatre still used for concerts and events. Pula Airport is the main UK gateway.
Hilltop interior
The limestone ridge towns are among the less visited places in Croatia. Motovun is a walled medieval town above the Mirna valley truffle forest, Grožnjan an artists' colony that is car-free within its walls, and Brtonigla a wine village in the black truffle zone.

A Wedding in Istria
Venetian hill towns, vineyard estates and truffle forest on Croatia's northern peninsula
Rovinj is the most photogenic coastal town: a Venetian settlement on a peninsula, with coloured houses climbing to the basilica of Saint Euphemia. Seafront hotels in the Monte Mulini park offer ceremony terraces and full event services.
The interior holds a strong food and wine landscape. The hilltop towns of Motovun, Grožnjan, Oprtalj and Brtonigla rise from vineyards and truffle forest. The white truffle season runs from late September to early December and the black truffle season from January to March.
Choosing a setting
Choosing a wedding setting in Istria
Wine estate
A working winery with an olive grove and a pool, inside a converted estate near Bale, is the defining Istrian estate venue. Exclusive hire is available.
Coastal resort
Two adjacent seafront hotels in the Rovinj pine forest provide the coastal event offer.
Hilltop town venue
Several hill towns have licensed outdoor event spaces. The piazza and walls of Motovun can be hired through the town administration, and Grožnjan can host a dinner for a smaller group.
Agriturizam estate
Working farm estates across the interior offer exclusive hire for intimate weddings, with a winery, truffle hunting and rooms in converted stone buildings.

Getting there
How guests arrive
Pula Airport is the primary gateway, with UK services running mainly from May to October. Trieste, Venice and Zagreb give year-round access for off-season travel.
Trieste (TRS) and Venice Marco Polo (VCE). For travel from November to April, when Pula has limited services, these two have UK flights year-round and give workable entry points for winter or truffle-season weddings.
Pula Airport (PUY). easyJet, Ryanair, TUI and Jet2 fly to Pula from several UK airports, mostly between May and October. A hire car suits groups using the interior.
Zagreb Airport (ZAG). Croatia's main international airport. It matters for Istria only when connecting to a wider itinerary.

Food and drink
Eating and drinking in Istria
Istrian cooking is shaped by Venetian and Italian influence. Truffle, indigenous wine and olive oil define the table.
White truffle (tartufo bianco)
The white truffles of the Mirna valley are comparable to Alba truffle in aroma. Shaved fresh over pasta, risotto or eggs, they are served from late September to mid-December.
Fuži and truffle cream pasta
Fuži is the hand-rolled pasta of Istria, quill-shaped tubes of egg-rich dough served with truffle cream, game ragù or mushroom sauce.
Malvazija Istarska
The indigenous white grape of Istria, grown on the peninsula for over two thousand years. The wine is aromatic and dry.
Good to know
Before you book
Seasonal access to Pula Airport
Pula runs mainly on a seasonal schedule. For truffle-season weddings from October to December, or winter estate events, the UK route should be checked, with Trieste, Venice or Zagreb as alternatives.
Car hire for the interior
The hill towns lack public transport adequate for a wedding group. A hire car is practical and the roads are good, and larger groups can arrange a minibus or coach for excursions.
Currency
Croatia uses the euro. Cards are accepted at hotels, restaurants and most venues.

Questions couples ask
Before you decide
Is Istria worth choosing after Dubrovnik or Hvar?
It offers a different Croatia. Dubrovnik and Hvar are defined by Venetian architecture, island hopping and summer energy, while Istria is defined by hill towns, vineyard estates and truffle hunting. It is quieter and more food-led.
When is truffle season, and how can it be built into a wedding?
White truffles are harvested from late September to mid-December, and black truffles from January to March and again in summer. A half-day hunt for guests before the ceremony, ending with truffle pasta at the estate, is a distinctive pre-wedding activity.
How does Rovinj connect to Pula Airport?
Rovinj lies north-west of Pula by a direct road. A coach or minibus transfer should be arranged ahead, since there is no regular public bus between the airport and Rovinj.
Is the Pula Arena available for private events?
It can be hired through its management and holds hundreds of guests. It suits a large-scale wedding. Site fees are negotiated individually.
When is the best time of year for a wedding in Istria?
May and June are the recommended months: warm, with visitor numbers well below peak. September and October are increasingly popular, with the white truffle season opening in late September, vineyards in harvest and autumn light on the hill towns.
