Marrying in Gloucestershire
Gloucestershire is the county that anchors the western Cotswolds and extends far beyond them. Cheltenham, the finest Regency spa town in England, sits at the county's centre and provides the hospitality infrastructure, the rail connection from Paddington, and the urban quality that purely rural counties lack. Cheltenham is two hours from London by direct train, a distance that is comfortable for a weekend wedding but sufficient to create a genuine sense of destination.
The county's wedding geography divides into three distinct zones. The Gloucestershire Cotswolds, from Chipping Campden south through Broadway, Stow-on-the-Wold, and Bourton-on-the-Water to Northleach, are among the most sought-after rural venues in England. The vale between the Cotswolds escarpment and the Severn is broader, flatter, and quieter, with a different kind of agricultural estate. The Forest of Dean to the west is one of the last great ancient forests of England and offers a venue landscape unlike anything else in the county.
What Gloucestershire offers beyond the Cotswolds guide's coverage is context. Cheltenham as a weekend base means guests have access to a town of genuine quality: the Regency terraces, the racecourse, the jazz and literature festivals, the independent restaurant scene. Couples marrying in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds often base their wedding weekend in Cheltenham, 20 to 30 minutes from most estate venues by car.

The Gloucestershire Cotswolds follow the same seasonal pattern as the broader Cotswolds belt: May and June for meadow flowers and long days, September for golden light and lower visitor numbers. Cheltenham's festival calendar, the Cheltenham Festival in March, the Jazz Festival in May, the Science Festival in June, and the Literature Festival in October, means that accommodation in the town fills and prices peak around these events. What venues are like

Cotswolds Country House Estate
The limestone-built manor houses and country houses of the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, available for exclusive hire with formal gardens, walled kitchen gardens, and estate accommodation. The finest properties in Chipping Campden, Stow, and Broadway territories are among the most sought-after country house venues in England. The Gloucestershire examples are typically priced slightly below their Oxfordshire and Worcestershire equivalents for comparable architectural quality.
Regency Town Venue
The formal rooms of Cheltenham's Regency terraces and assembly rooms, available for civil ceremonies and receptions. The Pittville Pump Room, a Grade I listed Ionic rotunda, is one of the finest small ceremonial buildings in England and is available for exclusive wedding hire. The town's Georgian scale gives ceremony rooms a proportion and lightness that Victorian country house hotels lack.
Medieval Castle
Berkeley Castle, built in 1117 and continuously occupied since, is the finest medieval castle in the county and one of the best-preserved in England. The castle's great hall, inner courtyard, and formal terraced garden are available for private events. The historical weight of Berkeley, including its role in the murder of Edward II, creates an atmosphere no purpose-built venue can generate.
Converted Tithe Barn
Stone-built medieval barns in the Cotswolds villages and on the Severn plain, converted to licensed event venues while retaining their original oak roof structure and limestone walls. Several of the finest examples are in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, between Northleach and Cirencester. The limestone construction and the scale of the nave create an event space that is specific to this area of England.
Forest Estate and Woodland Venue
Properties on the edge of the Forest of Dean with access to ancient woodland, clearings, and the specific character of the Royal Forest. For couples who want a ceremony setting among ancient oaks rather than in an open parkland, the Forest of Dean offers something that is genuinely rare in English wedding venues. Several converted estate buildings and forest-edge lodges are available for exclusive hire.

The Gloucestershire Cotswolds villages are not directly served by rail: Moreton-in-Marsh (Cotswold Line from Paddington, 90 minutes) is the closest station to the northern Cotswolds, with taxis and cars required for the final leg. For most couples, the approach via Cheltenham and road transfer is simpler. Private coach hire from Cheltenham station to a Cotswolds estate is the standard approach for larger guest groups.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American guests need an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) to visit, which costs £20. Anyone coming to the UK to marry who does not plan to stay applies for a Marriage Visitor visa instead: it costs £135, can be applied for from 3 months before travel, and allows a stay of up to 6 months with the marriage inside that time.
Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman travel on an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) rather than a visa, for visits of up to 6 months. A couple coming to the UK to marry who do not plan to stay apply for a Marriage Visitor visa instead. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.
Other nationalities
Most visitors need an ETA or a visa, depending on nationality. A partner from outside the UK or Ireland gives notice together with their partner, with proof of immigration status and a passport photograph for each of them.
The registrar's fee is £114.50 at a registered religious building, and approved premises set their own.

Accommodation
Gloucestershire's wedding accommodation is centred on the southern Cotswolds country house hotels and spa properties, with the cathedral city of Gloucester and Cheltenham providing urban hotel options for larger guest groups.
At the table
Gloucestershire's food identity is defined by the Vale of Berkeley dairy tradition, the Cotswold water meadows, and the concentration of excellent restaurant kitchens in and around Cheltenham.
Stinking Bishop and Vale of Berkeley cheese
The Vale of Berkeley in the southwest of the county is one of England's most productive artisan dairy districts. Stinking Bishop, a washed-rind cheese made at Churcham Farm near Gloucester using milk from Gloucester cattle, is the most pungent and internationally recognised cheese produced in the county. It appears regularly on Gloucestershire wedding cheese boards alongside more restrained examples from the same producers.
Gloucester Old Spot pork
The Gloucester Old Spot is a rare-breed pig native to the orchards and water meadows of the Severn Vale, traditionally fed on windfall apples and whey. The breed is protected and the pork, with its higher fat content and distinctive flavour, is increasingly available from farm butchers in the county. Gloucestershire charcuterie from Old Spot pigs is one of the most characterful local food products available for a wedding canapé selection.
Le Champignon Sauvage, Cheltenham
David Everitt-Matthias's Michelin two-star restaurant in central Cheltenham has operated from the same premises for over 30 years and is one of the most respected fine dining restaurants outside London. It is widely used as a rehearsal dinner destination and represents the highest level of kitchen ambition available in Gloucestershire.

What planners tell couples
Cheltenham is the best guest base in the county
Cheltenham Spa station is on the Great Western Main Line with direct services to London Paddington in approximately 2 hours. The Regency town has one of the best independent restaurant and hotel infrastructures of any English market town outside London. For guests not staying at the venue, Cheltenham provides accommodation depth that the surrounding rural areas cannot match.
Bristol Airport serves the south of the county
Bristol Airport (BRS) is approximately 35 to 45 minutes from Gloucester and Cheltenham by road and is the most practically useful regional airport for Gloucestershire. Direct services operate from Dublin, Amsterdam, and a wide range of European destinations. For international guests arriving from outside the UK, the Heathrow option adds approximately 90 minutes of road or rail travel but provides substantially broader connectivity.
Sudeley Castle is open to visitors and worth including
Sudeley Castle near Winchcombe in the northern Cotswolds is a genuine working castle with 10 centuries of history, the tomb of Catherine Parr within the chapel, and award-winning gardens. It is open to the public during the season and is widely used as a wedding ceremony venue. For guests arriving the day before the wedding, a morning visit to Sudeley is among the most historically resonant activity options in the county.
Cheltenham Racecourse calendar affects local accommodation prices
The Cheltenham Festival in March and other major race meetings draw very large crowds to the town and push hotel room rates to multiples of the normal rate. If the wedding date falls near a race meeting, book guest accommodation well in advance and price check early to avoid being caught by the demand surge.
