Marrying in Burgundy
Burgundy draws more argument among wine people than any other region. The Cote d'Or, a narrow limestone escarpment running south from Dijon through Beaune, makes Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that other regions work hard to match. Its mosaic of named vineyard parcels has no equal in French wine country, and Dijon is a short TGV ride from Paris.
Weddings cluster in two zones. The Cote de Nuits, from Dijon to Nuits-Saint-Georges, is the Pinot Noir heartland. The Cote de Beaune, from Corton to Santenay, gives great whites alongside reds. Beaune, a medieval town enclosed by ramparts, is the wine capital and the natural guest base.
The register is intimate and serious about food and wine. Couples who choose it usually have a real link to the region. The venue pool is small but high in quality.

The areas of Burgundy
Cote de Nuits (Dijon to Nuits-Saint-Georges)
The northern Cote d'Or, home of Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanee and Chambolle-Musigny. Venues are estate based and small, suiting residential weekends for modest groups.
Beaune and the Cote de Beaune
The practical base, with the Hospices de Beaune open for exclusive hire at major events. The villages from Aloxe-Corton to Chassagne-Montrachet hold the strongest wedding estates.
Chablis and the Yonne
The northern outlier near Auxerre, making the most mineral white wines in France. Plateau farmland, lower demand and lower venue costs.
Maconnais and the Saone plain
The southern zone between Macon and Tournus, with approachable whites and rolling hills. Cluny's ruined abbey is the main site. Fewer wine tourists visit.
What venues are like
Wine domaine
A producer's family estate with a cellar and a house around a courtyard. A stone courtyard ceremony followed by a cellar dinner is a setting particular to Burgundy among French destination weddings.
Château
Mostly residences of the sixteenth to eighteenth century in private parks. Several belong to named domaines and include event hire.
Hotel venue
Beaune has a strong cluster of high-end hotels inside its walls. The Hotel-Dieu, with its fifteenth-century tiled courtyard, is the most striking event space in Burgundy.

Marrying legally in France
Civil marriage in France is held at the town hall, in public, before the mayor or a deputy, and a religious ceremony may not come before it. At least one of the couple, or one of their parents, must have a home or an established residence of at least one month in the commune on the day the banns are published. Two foreigners with no home in France can marry only at the consulate of one partner's country or in an overseas collectivity.
- 1After one month of residence in the commune
File with the town hall
Both partners attend to lodge the file at the town hall of the chosen commune, with original identity documents, proof of address dated more than one month earlier, birth certificates (under 6 months old if issued abroad; apostille or legalisation may be required), sworn translations, and where asked a certificate of custom and a certificate of celibacy.
- 2Ten days of banns, then the prosecutor's review
Banns and hearing
Banns are posted for 10 days and the wedding cannot take place before the 10th day after publication; it must take place within one year after that period ends. The registrar hears the couple, usually together, and alerts the prosecutor to any serious sign of fraud, who has 15 days to allow or oppose the marriage.

French law allows only the civil ceremony to carry legal effect, and a religious marriage must not be celebrated before it. Many couples therefore marry in their own country or at a town hall and hold the blessing or celebration at the venue; a ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above and the venue and planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit France without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Other nationalities
EU, EEA and Swiss nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the French embassy or consulate in their country. Overseas departments and territories have their own entry rules; check with the French embassy.

Accommodation
Stock runs from abbey conversions and historic relais to small vignerons' houses beside famous appellations.
At the table
Burgundy cooking rests on beef, freshwater fish, mustard and Epoisses cheese.
Boeuf Bourguignon
Beef braised in red Burgundy with bacon, onions and mushrooms, best with Charolais beef and a village Bourgogne.
Escargots de Bourgogne
Snails baked in garlic and parsley butter, a regular opening course at wedding dinners.
Epoisses de Bourgogne
A washed-rind cow's milk cheese with an orange crust and a pungent centre, paired with Gevrey-Chambertin.
Jambon Persille
Cold ham terrine in parsley wine aspic, a traditional starter seen at Easter and formal dinners.
What planners tell couples
Getting There
Dijon is a TGV run from Paris, so UK guests can come by Eurostar. Lyon Saint-Exupery has direct London flights. Dijon airport has limited connections.
Wine Road and Grand Cru Route
The Route des Grands Crus runs south from Dijon through the Cote de Nuits and on through the Cote de Beaune. A guided private tour is the standout guest experience.
Harvest and the Hospices Auction
Harvest falls in mid to late September. The Hospices charity auction is on the third Sunday of November, and Beaune is full for weeks around it.
Venue Scale and Intimacy
The strongest properties are mid-size chateaux and hotel-restaurants. Couples after a grand, large event may prefer Bordeaux or the Loire.
