Joy Wedding: Intimate Weddings in Central Italy

Federica Tamborini takes on a limited number of weddings each year, works only with vendors she has personally vetted, and plans intimate celebrations across four regions of central Italy.

Some weddings are productions. Federica Tamborini plans the other kind. From a studio in Cattolica, on the border of Emilia-Romagna and Marche, Joy Wedding builds intimate, sophisticated celebrations for a few people rather than large-scale events, and takes on only a limited number of them each year so that every couple has her full attention from the first planning call to the last moment of the wedding day.

Federica was born in Rome and now lives on the Adriatic side of central Italy, within reach of the four regions she plans across: Marche, Romagna, Umbria and Abruzzo. Her own summary of herself is short: “I am a practical, organized and detail-oriented person, but also deeply connected to emotions and to beauty.” That double character runs through everything Joy Wedding does. The planning is structured and methodical; the intention behind it is emotional. She listens to a couple’s story first, then turns it into an organised project built on structure, clarity and full control.

What that looks like in practice is a great deal of unglamorous work done well in advance. A full-service Joy Wedding project runs somewhere between sixty and two hundred and fifty hours of dedicated planning, depending on scale and complexity: sourcing the venue and the ceremony site, selecting the caterer, building the vendor team, managing the budget from the first estimate to the final invoice, and then directing the whole thing on the ground on the day itself. Federica coordinates every professional involved and manages the on-site team from setup to the cutting of the cake, so that the couple never has to. She works on a digital planning platform that keeps invitations, guest responses and the seating plan in one place, and keeps the couple in the loop throughout.

A Joy Wedding project begins the way the couple’s own story does, with a conversation. Federica offers a complimentary first consultation to understand a couple’s vision and their priorities before any planning begins, so that everything that follows is built on what actually matters to them rather than on a template. From there she develops the design concept alongside trusted wedding designers, sources and proposes each vendor, and keeps the whole project visible to the couple on a shared digital platform that holds the invitations, the guest responses and the seating plan in one place. The couple watch their wedding take shape over the months without ever having to assemble it themselves, and they always know where things stand. It is planning as reassurance as much as logistics.

Two principles define the studio, and both are really the same principle. Federica works exclusively with a curated network of vendors she has personally vetted, and she does not improvise outside her own expertise. She does not hand-make the decorations, design the stationery or style the details herself; she brings in the specialists who do, people whose work she knows and trusts. Nothing on a Joy Wedding day is left to chance, and nobody unfamiliar is standing in the room when it matters. For a couple marrying far from home, that vetted network is the whole point: it is the difference between hoping the suppliers deliver and knowing they will.

That reassurance is what couples tend to remember. Harry and Victoria, who travelled from the United Kingdom to marry at Villa Imperiale in the hills above Pesaro, in Le Marche, put it simply. “Working with Federica was a highlight of our wedding experience,” they wrote. “She is incredibly kind and thoughtful, and she immediately put us at ease.” The venue is the kind Federica knows well: a Renaissance villa on a wooded hillside, within sight of the walled towns that give this stretch of the Marche its character.

In Abruzzo, the quietest and least-travelled of her four regions, Philip and Cristina married at Villa Corallo, a modern estate of pale stone, olive trees and a long reflecting pool set against the hills. They had come from the United States, and the distance never showed on the day. “There aren’t enough words to convey what Federica and her team did for us for our dream day,” they wrote afterwards. “She is thoughtful, precise, and meticulous.” Precise and meticulous are not accidental compliments; they are the natural result of sixty to two hundred and fifty hours of preparation, most of it invisible to the guests and entirely the point for the couple.

Each region gives Federica a different register. Marche is her home ground: rolling hills, historic hill towns, and the Adriatic coast around Pesaro and Gabicce Monte, where a beach celebration at a place like Baia Vallugola is a more relaxed affair than a villa wedding. Romagna is the Riviera and the countryside estates behind it, from the resort towns down to convents and villas inland such as Conventino di Gradara and Convento di Mondaino. Umbria, the green heart of Italy, offers resort estates and countryside settings a little further from the coast. Abruzzo, between the Apennines and the sea, keeps things quiet and villa-led. Federica has built vendor relationships and local knowledge across all four, which is what lets her match a couple to a place rather than simply booking a venue.

It is worth being clear about what Federica does and does not do, because the boundary is part of the service. She does not hand-make the decorations, design the stationery or style the tablescapes herself. Instead she brings in the florists, designers, photographers and caterers whose work she has seen and trusts, and she directs them. The styled celebrations she has produced as editorial shoots, at settings such as Villa Miralfiore in Pesaro, show the aesthetic she gravitates toward: restrained, warm, and unmistakably Italian. The everyday discipline on a real wedding is the same as on those shoots. The right specialist is chosen for each part of the day, and a single planner who has done all the groundwork holds the whole thing together.

The commercial arrangement is deliberately transparent, and it reflects the same discipline. Joy Wedding charges a flat planning fee based on the scope of the work, not a percentage of the wedding budget, so the planner’s incentive is never to make the day more expensive. Full-service planning is the studio’s core offer; couples who have already done much of the planning themselves can book wedding-day coordination alone and simply hand over the logistics, so they can be fully present on the day rather than managing it. There is also a lighter venue-finding service for couples who mainly need help identifying the right setting. The full range, with current figures, sits on her Joy Wedding listing.

Federica’s couples come from across the world, and much of her work is the connective tissue of a destination wedding: coordinating local vendors, handling the on-the-ground logistics, and absorbing the small crises so they never reach the couple. David and Emily, who came from Australia to marry in Umbria, felt it from the outset. “From the very first call, we knew Federica was someone special,” they wrote. “There was an instant sense of calm, humour, and warmth.” Calm is the word couples reach for again and again, and it is not a personality trait so much as a product: the calm of a day that has been thought through completely in advance.

Her work has travelled well beyond her own four regions. Joy Wedding has been featured on international wedding publications including Style Me Pretty, Whimsical Wonderland Weddings and Boho Weddings, alongside the 5 Star Wedding Directory, where 13 couples have reviewed the studio and every review gives it five stars. For a boutique planner who deliberately keeps her numbers small, that reach is a form of quiet proof. The weddings are intimate by choice, but the standard behind them is anything but provincial, and the couples who find her tend to have looked carefully before choosing.

On the day, the work becomes invisible, which is the surest sign of it being done well. Federica and her team take over the running of the wedding from setup to the cutting of the cake, managing the vendors, the timeline and the inevitable small surprises so that the couple and their guests never see them. What the couple experience is not a schedule being enforced but a day that simply flows, because every decision behind it was made calmly, weeks or months earlier. That is the quiet ambition of the whole studio: to make a great deal of careful work disappear into a day that feels effortless.

It is a boutique practice by design, and it intends to stay one. Federica takes on a small number of weddings a year because full attention does not scale, and full attention is what she is selling. For couples who want an intimate Italian wedding planned with the discipline of a much larger one, and who would rather trust a single, meticulous planner than assemble a day themselves from a distance, Joy Wedding is a rare and considered choice. The full portfolio and the studio’s approach are gathered on its Joy Wedding showcase, and Federica can be reached directly to talk through a wedding in Marche, Romagna, Umbria or Abruzzo.
