Paola De Paola started her career photographing musicians for record companies and music magazines, and she has a fine-art background from her studies in Italy. She photographed her first London wedding in 2013 and now works from London across the UK and Europe, with weddings published from Old Marylebone, Islington, Camden and Chelsea town halls to Cliveden House, Ston Easton Park in Somerset, Clearwell Castle in the Forest of Dean, Eilean Donan Castle on the Isle of Skye, and Umbria, the Veneto and Tuscany.
She calls her style warm, energetic and intimate. The approach is documentary: she photographs the day as it unfolds, guides gently when it helps and steps back when it does not, and wants couples to trust her enough to forget she is there. She works mostly in colour with some black and white, and favours a wide 35mm lens because it lets her stay close to people while still seeing everything around them.
“I approach every wedding I photograph as if it was my first one, with excitement, passion, creativity and total commitment.”
Paola De Paola
Her weddings are inclusive by intent. She describes herself as an LGBTQ+ friendly photographer, and her galleries move easily between two brides on a red Routemaster, two grooms with their dogs in a shower of confetti, a Jewish blessing under a chuppah in Umbria and a Brazilian and Greek celebration by the Thames. She also cares about sustainability and plastic-free celebrations, and is happy to introduce couples to the florists, make-up artists and venues she knows.
Many of her destination weddings are in Italy, her homeland. She speaks Italian, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, which helps with group photographs, suppliers and families who do not share a language. Recent Italian weddings include a woodland ceremony at Frassanelle near Venice, a summer wedding at Borgo di Celle in Umbria and a celebration at Villa Dal Pozzo near Pisa.
A full day runs from preparations to the first dance, up to eight hours, and couples receive at least 440 edited photographs as high-resolution files for printing and web-ready versions for sharing, in an online gallery where family and friends can order prints. Handmade Queensberry or Folio albums and a personalised USB in a handmade box are available as extras.
