Greg Pittard and The Ice Box

The Ice Box has made ice sculptures in London since 1993. It was started by Philip Hughes, known in the trade as the King of Ice, and today it is led by managing director Greg Pittard, who joined as an ice bagger in 2003, with Richard Elmer as chief executive. The team works from New Covent Garden Market and supplies ice to bars, caterers and event producers as well as making bespoke sculptures.

For weddings the work centres on the reception. The studio carves entwined hearts, swans that frame a seating plan, three tier ice cakes with flowers frozen inside, and champagne displays that hold bottles on ice. Ice bars run from 2m to 20m and can be engraved with a couple's monogram, and ice cubes can be stamped with initials or a design chosen for the day.

Flowers are a particular strength. The team freezes roses, orchids, hydrangeas and lilies into clear blocks, cubes and vases, and works alongside florists, with fresh stems sourced from the flower market next door. Table centres range from a single rose in an ice cube to long troughs of spring flowers laid along a banquet table.

The Ice Box also builds large-scale installations for corporate and brand clients, and it is open about that range. Its portfolio takes in a 4m round ice bar for a private wedding, a 4m square bar for an Indian wedding party in Delhi and a week-long installation for a wedding in Calgary, alongside work in Germany, France, Dubai and Davos.

Designs are drawn up by the sales team to the couple's or planner's brief, carved by the production sculptors, and delivered and installed by the operations crew on the day.

How they work

From the first message to the day itself

  1. 01Enquiry

Couples and planners send the event date, town, number of guests, budget and a short description of the event through the website form, or call the office.

  2. 02Designed to your requirements

The creative sales team works from the couple's requirements to design sculptures, bars or table centres, whether the couple has a firm idea or wants inspiration.

  3. 03Choosing the details

Engraving, monograms, frozen flowers, lighting and the size of each piece are agreed, and flowers are matched with the couple's florist.

  4. 04Carving and production

The production sculptors carve and engrave the ice by hand, working from clear blocks made for sculpture.

  5. 05Delivery and set up

The operations crew delivers the ice and sets it up at the venue, in the UK and abroad, so it is ready for the reception.

Before you write to them

What does an ice sculpture cost for a wedding?

Bespoke ice sculptures, ice bars and table centres are quoted to each brief. Party ice luges and sculptures under £350 are sold through a separate online shop.

Where is The Ice Box based and where does it work?

The studio is at New Covent Garden Market in London. It delivers across London and the UK and into Europe, and has installed ice for weddings in Delhi and Canada, as well as work in Germany, France and Davos.

Can flowers be frozen into the ice?

Yes. The team freezes roses, orchids, lilies and hydrangeas, and fresh or silk flowers, into blocks, cubes and carved vases, and works with the couple's florist.

How big can an ice bar be?

Ice bars run from 2m to 20m and beyond. A wedding bar can carry an engraved monogram on the front.

Can the ice be personalised?

Sculptures, bar fronts and table centres can be engraved with names, initials or a design, and ice cubes can be stamped with a monogram made for the day.

What ice shapes suit a wedding reception?

Popular choices include entwined hearts, swans, a champagne bottle holder, an ice cake with frozen flowers, a sculpture of a pet with a luge and a monogram bar.

Does The Ice Box supply ice for drinks as well as sculptures?

Yes. It supplies cubed, crushed and cocktail ice, ice blocks and dry ice, and an online calculator estimates the amount needed for a given number of guests.
