Wine tasting in Chianti for wedding guests: how to plan it

Which Tuscan wedding venues make their own wine, three tasting formats that work for guests, and how to get everyone there and back.

Chianti Classico is produced across 71,800 hectares between Florence and Siena, covering the whole of Greve, Radda, Gaiole and Castellina in Chianti and parts of four more comuni, including San Casciano in Val di Pesa and Castelnuovo Berardenga, according to the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico. For wedding guests, the simplest wine day starts at a venue with its own vines and ends with a driver.

Start at the venue

Several venues we list make their own wine. Villa Mangiacane, at San Casciano, produces about 50,000 bottles of Chianti Classico a year from 43 hectares of vines, with tastings and vineyard picnics for guests, by its own figures. It also makes olive oil and vin santo.

Castello di Casole, in the hills west of Siena, is surrounded by organic vineyards and olive groves, and the estate’s wine and oil reach the table. Castel Monastero, near Castelnuovo Berardenga and 20 km from Siena, has the Cantina in its medieval wine cellar, a restaurant that also hosts the late-night party.

Beyond Chianti: Brunello

Further south, Castello di Velona near Montalcino serves its own Brunello di Montalcino and Rosso di Montalcino at dinner. It is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Florence airport and about an hour from Siena by the hotel’s figures, so a Brunello day suits guests already staying in the south.

West of Florence, Borgo Bucciano at San Miniato makes its own red wine and extra virgin olive oil and serves them at meals. It is a short tasting at the table rather than a winery visit.

Three formats that work

Getting there and back

Book a minibus with a driver for any day that involves tasting. Chianti’s roads are narrow and winding, and nobody who has been tasting should drive them. Villa Mangiacane arranges private cars with drivers, and Castel Monastero offers transport for a fee.

Confirm the group size when you book. A tasting room set up for a few couples may not seat a wedding party, and a lunch for 40 is a different booking from a tasting for eight.

Questions couples ask

Which Tuscan wedding venues make their own wine?

Among those we list: Villa Mangiacane (Chianti Classico), Castello di Velona (Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino), Castello di Casole and Borgo Bucciano.

Is San Casciano in Val di Pesa in Chianti Classico?

Partly. The consortium lists San Casciano among the comuni partly inside the production zone.

When is the best time for a wine day?

Any time the estate is open to visits. September and October bring the harvest, which is memorable to see but busy for the estate, so book well ahead.
