A three-day Tuscany wedding itinerary: a plan that works

Arrival and welcome dinner, the wedding day, then brunch or the pool: a three-day plan for a country venue in Tuscany, with real travel times.

Most Tuscan destination weddings run over three days: arrival and a welcome dinner, the wedding, then a farewell brunch or a day by the pool. The plan below assumes a country venue with guests flying into Florence or Pisa, and uses the venues’ own published travel times.

Day one: arrival

Hold the welcome dinner where most guests sleep. If they are at the venue, keep it there; if they are in Florence, a city dinner saves a transfer, at the cost of a longer journey the next day.

Day two: the wedding

Leave the morning free: the spa, a tasting, or a few hours in Siena, which Castel Monastero puts about 20 minutes away. Keep it light, and get everyone back by early afternoon.

Decide early where the legal ceremony happens, because it can move the timetable. Villa Il Cerretino is a registered civil venue of the comune of Poggio a Caiano, so the ceremony stays on site. Castello di Casole lists the town hall in Casole d’Elsa, 9 km away, for civil weddings of up to 150, which means a convoy before the party.

In summer, hold the ceremony in the late afternoon, once the worst of the heat has gone. At Castello di Velona, religious ceremonies take place at the Abbey of Sant’Antimo, five minutes from the castle, before guests return to its terraces for dinner.

Check the finishing time before you book the band. Relais La Costa includes the party until 1am, later for a supplement, and Valle di Badia asks for discreet music only. Most venues publish nothing, so ask.

Know the wet-weather plan as well. Relais La Costa uses the Salone delle Feste at no extra cost, and Villa Il Cerretino’s indoor rooms take up to 180.

Day three: the day after

With a fourth day

Add a day in the Val d’Orcia, the UNESCO-listed valley south of Siena. Castello di Velona sits about 10 minutes from Montalcino, so guests there can be in the valley within minutes of breakfast.

Questions couples ask

How many nights should guests book?

Three covers the plan above. Some venues set the minimum: Relais La Costa asks for two nights midweek and three at weekends.

Can all our guests stay at the venue?

It depends on the venue. Castel Monastero takes up to 140 guests in-house, Relais La Costa 30 and Villa Il Cerretino 14.
