Paul Cunliffe, Wedding Celebrant in Phuket

Paul Cunliffe is an English-speaking wedding celebrant and master of ceremonies based full-time in Phuket, Thailand. He has led ceremonies on the island since 2014 and says he has officiated more than 500, on beaches, in private villas and at resorts, with most weeks including a beach ceremony, a villa elopement or a vow renewal.

He works as a specialist for the ceremony itself rather than as a wedding planner. Every ceremony is written from scratch around the couple, and he sends three full example ceremonies to read first. Couples can take lines from them, choose one outright or start from a blank page, then refine a personal draft together until both partners are happy with it.

Most of his work is on Phuket's west coast, at Hua Beach, Layan, Surin, Kamala, Kata and Bang Tao, in private villas around Cape Yamu, and at resorts such as Thavorn Beach Village and The Surin Resort. He also travels to Phang Nga and Khao Lak, Krabi, Koh Yao and Koh Samui, with travel costs quoted for the date and venue.

Around 80 per cent of his bookings come directly from resorts and established planners, so he arrives early on the day to coordinate with the planner and photographer. He is co-owner of Unique Phuket Wedding Planners with his partner Supparin, so couples who also need a planner can arrange both together.

The ceremonies range from beach weddings, elopements and vow renewals to same-sex ceremonies and Thai monk blessings, either on their own or combined with a Western-style ceremony. A ceremony usually runs 25 to 35 minutes, and optional MC services carry the reception through speeches, the cake cut and the first dance.

How they work

From the first message to the day itself

  1. 01Enquiry and introductory call

Couples send their date, venue, guest count and the kind of ceremony they want. Paul replies personally, usually within 24 hours, with availability, and an introductory video call is available if the couple wants one.

  2. 02Example ceremonies

He sends three full ceremony examples. Couples take the lines that feel right, choose one outright or start from a blank page.

  3. 03A written personal ceremony

Paul writes a full draft around the couple's story, readings, rituals and family moments, and they refine it together until both partners are happy with the final version.

  4. 04Final details

He collects the couple's full names, the names of any witnesses for the certificate, and colours for a unity sand ritual if they want one. Venue permission, set-up and flowers are arranged by the couple's planner or resort.

  5. 05The ceremony day

Paul arrives early, meets the couple, coordinates with the planner and photographer, manages the processional and delivers the ceremony, continuing as MC through the reception if booked.

We held our wedding on 2 Feb '20 and our ceremony with Paul was perfect. We had already been planning with him and his partner Toom for about 1.5 years but his attention to detail as a celebrant carried on all the way from the planning stages until the actual ceremony.
Firstly, he helped us to compose the words he would be speaking during the ceremony, customizing it to fit us and our values weeks before the actual day, in order for us to be able to think about it with a relaxed unhurried mind. He also helped us to print our vows at the last minute on nice teacards to hold during the ceremony.
On the morning of the wedding, he led us through a brief rehearsal to ensure that we knew how the ceremony itself would take place.
During the ceremony itself, he was very relaxed even during unexpected hiccups, which kept us at ease and happily relaxed throughout the whole time.
We highly, highly recommend Paul as your wedding celebrant ♥️

Paul was outstanding!! From the very beginning: first contact, introductory video call, discussing the details, preparing the script of the ceremony, providing us with tips for wedding vows and of course leading the ceremony - amazing, smooth and magical. Paul is very professional, so kind & gentle that all your stress is immediately relieved! He is also very careful and cautious about your needs. We recommend him to everyone as a wedding celebrant and him with his wife as a wedding planning agency - professional, trustworthy, transparent. We are so happy that Paul led our ceremony, couldn't have chosen better.
Thank you Paul once again for everything, hope to meet you again some day on our wedding vows renewal ;-)

Questions couples ask

Before you write to them

How much does a wedding celebrant in Phuket cost with Paul Cunliffe?

The celebrant service starts from 8,000 THB and includes a consultation, a personally written ceremony, delivery on the day and a commemorative certificate. Reception MC services start from 15,000 THB. Travel outside Phuket is priced for the date and venue.

Is a celebrant-led ceremony in Thailand legally binding?

No, it is symbolic. Most international couples complete the legal registration in their home country, or register at a Phuket district office. Paul explains the options, and the legal process involves obtaining an affidavit from the couple's embassy in Bangkok at least 20 working days before the wedding.

How far ahead should we book?

Peak season runs from November to April. Six to nine months ahead is comfortable, and he also takes shorter-notice elopements when the diary allows.

Where does Paul work?

He is based in Phuket and works across the island, including Hua, Layan, Surin, Kamala, Kata, Bang Tao and Cape Yamu. He also travels to Phang Nga, Khao Lak, Krabi, Koh Yao and Koh Samui.

Can he officiate same-sex ceremonies?

Yes. He has led many same-sex ceremonies in Phuket, and the structure, language and readings are written around the couple. Same-sex couples have been able to register a marriage in Thailand since 23 January 2025.

How long does the ceremony last?

Usually 25 to 35 minutes. It runs longer with several readings or rituals and shorter for an elopement.

What languages does he work in?

English.

Do guests take part in the ceremony?

Yes. Readings, sand ceremonies, ring warmings, hand-fastings and acknowledgements of family members are common, and are agreed during planning.
