Melanie Secciani and Tuscan Wedding Cakes

Tuscan Wedding Cakes is the studio of Melanie Secciani, a cake designer working from the Oltrarno district of Florence. She makes one-of-a-kind, custom-designed tiered cakes for weddings in Tuscany and throughout Italy, and every cake is designed and finished by her own hands.

The style is romantic and sculptural: fine hand piping, bas-relief, hand-painted tiers, gold leaf and sugar flowers modelled one petal at a time. Her inspiration comes from the Tuscan landscape, the groves and vineyards and a particular greenish-yellow of the hills. Her work has been published in Brides, Style Me Pretty, Elle, Harper's Bazaar and Vogue editions, and she was named Cakemaker of the Year 2020 by Destination Weddings & Honeymoon Abroad magazine.

“I believe wedding cakes are living art.”

Melanie Secciani, founder and cake designer

Cakes are priced in three tiers of ambition: Tenuta for intimate celebrations, Villa for destination weddings and Palazzo for statement designs. She takes only one to four cakes a week, so each gets her full attention, and she delivers and sets up in person, travelling with a repair kit in case it is needed.

She works with leading wedding planners and venues across Tuscany, from Florentine villas and castles to hotels such as the Four Seasons Florence, and has made cakes for destination weddings in Puglia and on the Amalfi Coast.

How they work

From the first message to the day itself

  1. 01Enquire

Share the date, venue, guest count, budget and style through the enquiry form. Replies take 24 to 48 hours, and because only one to four cakes are taken each week, early booking is advised.

  2. 02Tasting and consultation

Tastings and design appointments take place in the Florence studio by appointment, with five to seven flavours from the menu to try. Couples who cannot travel can arrange a video call instead.

  3. 03Design

Cake and couple design it together around the wedding itself: the venue, the guest count, the florals and the style. Size is chosen for the room as much as the numbers, and faux tiers can add height for a smaller guest list.

  4. 04Flavours and finishing

Choose from a menu of ten flavours, from Terra di Siena to Salted Caramel Truffle. One flavour is recommended for the main cake, with mini cakes in a second flavour as guest favours.

  5. 05Delivery and set-up

Melanie travels with each cake and sets it up personally, usually about an hour before it is served. Summer deliveries are scheduled for the cooler evening hours.

Questions couples ask

Before you write to them

How much does a wedding cake from Tuscan Wedding Cakes cost?

Designs start at €1,250. Tenuta cakes typically run from €1,250 to €2,000, Villa cakes from €2,000 to €4,000 and Palazzo cakes start at €4,000. A useful guide is about 3 percent of the event-night budget.

How far ahead should we book our cake?

As early as possible. Only one to four cakes are taken each week so that every cake receives full personal attention.

Do you offer tastings?

Yes, by appointment in the Florence studio, usually with five to seven flavours to try while the design is worked out. Tastings are free for confirmed clients with a reserved date, and €50 in advance otherwise, deducted from the balance if you book.

Can we choose more than one flavour?

One flavour is recommended, so guests are not left wondering about the one they did not get. Mini cakes in a second flavour make good favours.

Do you make gluten-free or lactose-free cakes?

Yes. Gluten-free cake can be used for the top two tiers, and every flavour can be made lactose-free by leaving out the mousses and creams.

Can we use fresh flowers on the cake?

Fresh flowers can be arranged with your florist, but sugar flowers are preferred, because many flowers are toxic or sprayed and do not sit well on cake. Naked and buttercream cakes work with food-safe flowers.

How is the cake delivered, and can it sit out in the heat?

Melanie delivers and sets up each cake personally, about an hour before it is served. Butter melts at 24°C, so two hours in the evening out of the sun is usually fine; for all-day display, a heat-safe cutting tier with a faux cake works well.

Where do you work?

From Florence for weddings in Tuscany, Florence and Siena and throughout Italy, including Puglia and the Amalfi Coast.
