About Micklefield Hall

Micklefield Hall is a 350-acre working farm near Sarratt in Hertfordshire that holds one wedding a day, with a licensed pavilion beside the pond and an oak-framed barn seating 200.

Micklefield Hall is a 350-acre working farm in the Chiltern countryside near Sarratt, farmed by the Rankin family, who live in the hall. Anna and Jamie Rankin started the weddings, and their son Tom and his wife Annabel run them today. Only one wedding is held each day, with the Great Barn and the gardens exclusive from 8am to midnight. The Temple, an open pavilion at the head of the pond beneath a 450-year-old oak, is licensed for ceremonies and seats 200 on both banks of the water.

The Great Barn, framed in fifteenth-century oak, seats 200 for the wedding breakfast and has underfloor heating, air conditioning, a stage and a dance floor. The Orangery and a covered loggia provide cover in wet weather. There is no kitchen on site, so food comes from an approved list of caterers, with Kalm Kitchen as the exclusive partner and kosher and Indian options included. Six bedrooms in the converted cow barn and a Shepherd's Hut sleep the nearest guests. Junction 18 of the M25 is two miles away, and Heathrow is about 30 minutes by road.

Vows beside the pond

The Temple is an open pavilion at the head of the estate pond, under an oak that has stood for around 450 years. Guests take seats on either bank, looking across the water instead of down an aisle. The pavilion is licensed and seats 200, with a discreet sound system so the vows carry.

Dinner under 15th-century oak

The Great Barn has oak framing, a roof of trusses, underfloor heating, air conditioning, a stage and a dance floor, and seats 200. A raised platform was built for the photographer. The Orangery and the covered loggia offer cover when the weather turns.

Location

Hertfordshire

Micklefield Hall sits on Sarratt Road between Sarratt and Rickmansworth, two miles from junction 18 of the M25 at Chorleywood, in the Chiltern Hills. Heathrow is about thirty minutes away and Luton about forty, and Chorleywood is on the Metropolitan line, so a London guest list reaches a working farm in open countryside without anybody needing to stay the night. The drive in gives away nothing about how much land sits behind the buildings.

As soon as we walked into our venue visit at Micklefield Hall, we knew it was our absolute dream venue come true. We absolutely loved the barn, the courtyard and outside area – at day and night – and we know that our twinkly winter wonderland vision could not happen in any better place.

Review

We held our winter wedding at Micklefield Hall and it was magical. Fairy lights twinkling in the barn, a glorious Christmas tree, a roaring fire outside and festive greenery and candles running down the tables. The grounds were stunning giving us opportunity for beautiful photos outside in the winter sun. We retreated to the orangery for drinks and canapés with the sun twinkling in through the windows. The team were exceptional, with Izzy in particular somehow being everywhere at once while remaining calm, warm and helpful.

Frequently asked questions

Micklefield Hall

Where is Micklefield Hall?

On Sarratt Road between Sarratt and Rickmansworth in the Chiltern Hills. It is two miles from junction 18 of the M25 at Chorleywood, about 30 minutes from Heathrow and 40 from Luton.

Can we marry outdoors?

Yes. The Temple, an open pavilion at the head of the pond under a 450-year-old oak, is licensed for civil ceremonies and seats 200, with guests on both banks of the water.

How many guests can it hold?

Up to 200. The Great Barn seats 200 and The Temple also seats 200.

Is it used by one wedding at a time?

Always. The estate holds one wedding a day, with the Great Barn and the gardens yours from 8am to midnight.

Can we choose our own caterer?

There is no in-house kitchen. Food comes from the estate's approved caterers, and Kalm Kitchen is the exclusive partner. Kosher and Indian caterers are on the list.

What time does the music stop?

Music and the bar close at 11.30pm. Amplified music runs through the Great Barn's own system and cannot be played outdoors.

What happens if it rains?

The Orangery, built of brick and Crittall glass with a wood burner, is licensed in its own right and can host the ceremony or drinks. The covered loggia with its brick fireplace gives cover with the garden still in view.

Where do guests stay?

Six double bedrooms in the converted cow barn and a Shepherd's Hut sleep the closest guests, at £175 + VAT per room including breakfast. The hall is the family home, so a larger party books into Rickmansworth, Chorleywood or Watford.

How much does venue hire cost?

From £5,750 + VAT for 2026, covering a Monday to Wednesday in January, February, March, November or December for up to 200 guests. A peak weekend between May and September is £13,750 + VAT, and 2027 and 2028 dates start from £6,750 + VAT.

Are there rules on confetti and fireworks?

Yes. Fireworks, confetti cannons and Chinese lanterns are not allowed, and only petal or biodegradable confetti may be used, because this is a working farm with livestock and crops.
