Exclusive-use Georgian country house above the Thames · Taplow, Buckinghamshire
A Georgian house above the Thames, owned by the Shephard family since 1934 and hired to one wedding at a time, with beds for 26.
Hedsor House is a Georgian country house at Taplow, on the Buckinghamshire and Berkshire border, standing high above the River Thames in Grade II listed parkland. The present house was completed in 1868 on ground lived on since the 1100s. Princess Augusta and Queen Victoria were guests of earlier owners, and portraits of George III and Queen Charlotte still hang inside. In 1934 Philip Shephard gave the house to his son Philip and daughter-in-law Florence as a wedding present, and four generations of the family have kept it since, through years as a United States Air Force communications centre and the headquarters of International Computers Ltd. The Shephards opened it for weddings and filming in 2007.
Every wedding has the whole house to itself. The ceremony is held in the house or in the gardens, both licensed, the wedding breakfast follows in the Ballroom, and the evening brings more guests for dancing in the house before the night is spent under its roof. The family runs the house as a family would: a Wedding Specialist and a Duty Manager come with every booking, dogs are welcome at the ceremony and the drinks, Highland cattle graze the park, bees make the estate's honey, and the family has planted oaks, beeches and cedars across the grounds.

The Centre Hall takes the ceremony beneath its dome, for up to 150 with its balcony, and the ground-floor rooms and the gardens hold a civil licence, so vows can also be said on the South Lawn or the South Terrace. The Boudoir suits the smallest ceremonies and a Jewish tisch. St Nicholas' church, twelfth century, is a five-minute walk from the front steps for a church wedding, and the house hosts South Asian, East Asian, Afro-Caribbean, Jewish and Persian weddings, with the Wedding Specialist guiding each one.

Champagne after the ceremony is poured in the Drawing Room, which sits between the Centre Hall and the South Lawn, and the lawn and the South Terrace take the drinks outdoors with the Thames Valley below. The Dutch Sunken Garden is where couples go for photographs. The Ballroom, panelled in wood, seats the wedding breakfast, and the evening begins in the Willingdon Bar before the Centre Hall becomes the dance floor. Standing, the house takes 250. Mehndi and Sangeet evenings are held here, low-noise fireworks can be arranged through the house's pyrotechnics supplier, and a helicopter may land on the South Lawn with clearance.

Twenty-six guests sleep in the house. The Lavinia Suite, the wedding suite, is named for Florence and Philip's honeymoon in Sri Lanka and has an onyx bathroom with a clawfoot bath and a dressing room for the wedding morning. The Alexander and Florence suites take the closest guests, the other bedrooms are named for Shephard family stories, and the Dustin Suite serves for getting ready and for nightcaps. Breakfast is cooked for everyone in the Library, and the Hive, an octagonal three-bedroom cottage in the grounds, is kept for the couple the night before.

Sojo Kitchen, Goose & Berry, Social Pantry and Lettice Events are the caterers on Hedsor's preferred list, and every wedding chooses one of them, with Goose & Berry cooking the Darcy package. Social Pantry and Lettice Events hold B Corp certification, and every package has a Green Touch version with more sustainable menus. Dry-hire couples choose from the same list and set their own menu, flowers, production and cake.
