About Upper House Hayfield

A castle-style private estate at the edge of Kinder Scout, with a medieval hall, a tipi and a courtyard above Kinder Reservoir.

Upper House Hayfield in Hayfield

Upper House Estate is a castle-style private estate on Kinder Road, near Hayfield, standing at the edge of Kinder Scout in the Peak District. The front of the house looks out over Kinder Reservoir from a terrace beneath the Solstice Tower and Clock Tower Archway, and the private grounds give guests direct access to the Kinder Mountain walks, with time by the fire in the house for those who prefer it. A wedding here is a private affair, with the castle, its Medieval Great Hall, its courtyard and its bars set aside for one wedding party for the length of the celebration.

Ceremony Only, Signature Lodge, Estate for the Weekend and the Gamekeepers Stay are the four ways to marry at Upper House. Each is supported by management coordination from the start to the finish of the wedding day and a schedule of client meetings throughout the booking period. The Wedding Pack gathers action plans, a suppliers list, a drinks guide, a guest guide, an insurance guide and a wine and cocktail list in a wedding folder. Couples can arrange a viewing or schedule a call with the team before they commit to a date, and brochures for each package can be requested.

Ceremonies

Vows in the hall or at the Solstice Tower

Upper House is licensed to hold marriages and same sex marriages, and Local Government Registrars perform the ceremony at the estate. Upper House has to be booked before the couple apply to the registrars, who will also ask for any documents and visas to be in place, and the UK government website on marriages and partnerships sets out the requirements. There is a choice of an indoor ceremony in the Medieval Great Hall or an outdoor ceremony at the Solstice Tower. For a personal ceremony the estate can source a celebrant, and translators and translation services can be arranged. Ceremony Only weddings are offered midweek, from Monday to Thursday.

Receptions

Feasts and parties across the estate

The Medieval Great Hall has fireplaces at either end, candelabra flower hoops and stained glass windows, with a Minstrels Gallery whose lighting runs on into the courtyard. It is used for dining and dancing, and standing receptions take up to 130 guests. The adjoining Garret Room is a chill-out room with sofas and a wood burning stove. The Central Castle Courtyard has a covered reception space, with patio heaters, festoon lighting and lounge and bistro furniture. In the Tipi Dining Hall a picture window looks onto Kinder Reservoir, and the tables are circular or oblong, with glassware, wine coolers, a PA system and cake tables. A traditional English pub and the Woodstore Cocktail Bar complete the spaces, and the cocktail bar opens on the wedding evening with a trained mixologist.
