Family-run barn venue on a working farm · Rushton Spencer, near Macclesfield
A seventh-generation family farm near Macclesfield where connected converted barns carry a wedding from morning preparation to the last dance on one site.
Heaton House Farm is a seventh-generation, family-owned working farm at Rushton Spencer, near Macclesfield, on the border of Cheshire and Staffordshire. It stands on a hillside with views over Cheshire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire, and the land is still farmed. The farm is a set of connected, converted farm barns and rustic buildings, so a wedding day passes from one area to the next without leaving the farm, from preparation and ceremony through to dining, partying and staying the night. Every couple has their own wedding coordinator, who helps with the plans from the time they book right up to and including the wedding day, working alongside the farm's events team.
A wedding here begins in the Bridal Pamper Room, a purpose-built preparation room with full-length mirrors, four hair and make-up stations and a Prosecco fridge. From there the day runs through the ceremony, the drinks, the meal and the dancing in the barns and grounds, and ends with guests sleeping on the farm. The family also runs the catering, so the weddings are made by the people who own the land and the kitchen. Smaller weddings can be held in the Old Stableyard, which has a small, intimate feel. The farm also holds Christmas parties and corporate events, and each couple is looked after by a team that keeps attention on the practical details from arrival to the very last dance.

There are five ceremony areas, indoors and outdoors. Outdoors, the Oak Pagoda has oak beams and countryside views, with guests seated on the patio or the lawn. Guests can instead be turned so that the Sycamore Tree and views over Cheshire sit behind the couple. Indoors, the Oak Beamed Barn has sandstone walls and green oak beams hung with fairy lights. Under the Stars has an artificial night-sky backdrop and has featured on the BBC's Don't Tell The Bride, and Under the Pleats has ivory drapes and built-in lighting. Couples who marry in a church elsewhere can arrive at the farm afterwards for the reception.

After the ceremony, fizz and canapés are served on the patio and in the grounds, while the couple and their photographer use the gardens. The private water gardens sit behind a secret door, with lily ponds, a rockery and waterfalls, and are reserved for the couple and photographer. Steeles Barn holds the wedding breakfast. It stays hidden until it is time to sit down, then the curtains are drawn back, with white marquee linings, coloured downlights and a movable backdrop that sets the size of the room to the guest numbers. While guests dine, the Wedding Barn is made ready for the evening, with bar, dancefloor, stage and lighting in one large space for live bands or DJs. The evening can include garden games, bouncy castles, fairground rides and sparklers on the patio. Numbers go up to 350 guests, and the latest finish is 11.45pm.

Bedrooms include rooms in converted farm buildings just across the courtyard from the main barns and rooms in the Beech Trees Bungalow, reserved for the wedding party to book until six months before the wedding. They are doubles, triples, quads and family rooms, and together sleep over 40 guests. The Honeymoon Suite is complimentary when four or more rooms are booked. Breakfast is served the next morning in the Old Stableyard, and caravan and motorhome pitches are also available.

Stable Yard Catering, created by the farm's family, provides the food. Menus range from traditional three-course meals to street food stalls, a smokehouse grill or a seven-course dinner, with dishes from hearty British food to Thai curries, American barbecue and Greek gyros. Couples join the chefs for a tasting to finalise the menu. Groom's Grazers bar snacks and a Bridal Brunch are also offered. The bar is fully stocked and serves from midday, including during the meal.
