Tudor castle hotel in 15 acres of walled gardens · Thornbury, South Gloucestershire
5.01 reviewA Tudor castle on the edge of the Cotswolds where couples can propose, marry, celebrate and sleep in bedchambers tied to Henry VIII.
Thornbury Castle is a 16th-century Tudor castle in the South Gloucestershire countryside, on the edge of the Cotswolds, run as a hotel and wedding venue. Four-poster beds and lavish bathrooms sit alongside contemporary comforts, and Henry VIII is named as a past guest of the castle. Couples can marry, celebrate and sleep here, whether the day is a grand occasion that takes the whole castle and its grounds or a small celebration with a handful of loved ones. The wedding planners help bring a couple's vision to life and take care of much of the organisation.
The castle stands within its original walls, and the grounds are laid out as ancient Tudor gardens. The Privy Garden, next to the lounge and Library, has a small shrub maze and views of the church and the castle, a magnolia tree that buds in March and a setting for alfresco dining, and the Goodly Garden is among the other manicured spaces. In the Rose Garden, roses chosen for their historical roots or connotations line a scented stroll, and a summerhouse is there for a cup of tea or an aperitif. The rolling countryside and the outside spaces recall the Tudor era as much as the interiors of the former royal castle.

Weddings range from a grand occasion with exclusive use of the whole castle and its grounds to a more intimate celebration with a handful of loved ones, and packages are offered to suit different requirements. For proposals, the events team helps bring ideas to life, from a grand statement with illuminated letters to a Champagne picnic in the grounds. The proposal package includes a private area within the castle grounds, a bottle of Champagne, a three-course dinner in the restaurant and an overnight stay with breakfast.

Tudor Hall is the largest of the castle's private rooms, with stone walls, a hand-painted ceiling, decorative windows and plenty of natural daylight. It has its own stone cave bar, a reception area and a small lounge, and doors open to the fountain and croquet lawn. The hall seats up to 70 guests for dinner, and standing receptions take up to 120. The Barons Sitting Room and Chancellors Lounge, on the first floor overlooking the fountain and front gardens, have original oak panelling and a stone fireplace, and suit a drinks reception and dinner. The Tower and Oriel Dining Rooms sit side by side, with high ceilings, chandeliers, a minstrels' gallery and arrowslit windows.

The castle has 26 rooms and 10 suites, sleeping up to 52 guests, and exclusive use includes all 26 rooms for a minimum of one night. The Henry VII family suite has a four-poster bedroom and a separate lounge that can become a bedroom. The Jane Seymour Suite is in the main tower up a spiral staircase, with castle views all the way to Wales. The Henry VIII Suite is a four-poster bedchamber linked to Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

Catering is in-house. The restaurant holds 3AA Rosettes for its cuisine and 4AA Red Stars for service. Menus include a seasonal dinner menu, a Six-Course Tasting Menu, All-Day Dining, Afternoon Tea and a children's menu. Much of the produce on the dinner menu is grown in the castle's own kitchen garden, using a non-dig method, and is harvested each morning.

We held our wedding here, 26 people - the whole experience was outstanding. The castle is obviously very beautiful- it is also maintained so well, and the rooms are full of lovely touches. Staff are always friendly yet unobtrusive, helpful and efficient - special thanks to Sophie for always being calm and amazingly helpful. The food was wonderful, over all our visits and the wedding itself.. Our day was so very special here!
