Gore Vidal's former clifftop villa · Ravello, Amalfi Coast
5.01 reviewGore Vidal's house from 1972, built into the cliff below Ravello: six suites, one party at a time and weddings of up to 80 guests.
Villa La Rondinaia was built from 1927 into the cliff face below Ravello, at the edge of the park of Villa Cimbrone, for Lady Lucylle, Lord Grimthorpe's daughter. The idea dates from 1915. Nicola Mansi of Ravello directed the work and Francesco Amato, a master stonemason from the town, built it. The house sits in the rock like a swallow's nest, which is what its name means, and shows itself only at the end of a walk through its park. Gore Vidal bought it in 1972 and lived and wrote here for more than three decades, and the villa stayed closed to outsiders until 2005. Since its restoration it has been let to one party at a time.
The terraced grounds step down the cliff in cypresses, pines, olives, lemon trees and vine pergolas, with the coast in view from Minori to Capo d'Orso. The gardens and the panoramic terraces take the day, a cobalt-blue pool with a pool house and sauna sits on the terraces above the sea, and NEXST, the villa's restaurant, cooks for the party. Weddings here are small: one party has the whole house and its grounds, and nobody else is staying.

A ceremony at La Rondinaia takes up to 80 guests, in the gardens or on one of the terraces above the sea, with the coast running from Minori to the point of Capo d'Orso in view. The in-house team plans the rite with the couple, from the first conversation to the vows, and for two alone there are elopement and proposal formats, with the house and its park to themselves.

Drinks and dinner are taken on the panoramic terraces beside the house, facing the Gulf of Salerno. The villa's rooms and its exteriors host the celebration: a gala dinner or a long lunch on the terraces, the garden paths and the pool terrace for the hours between, and the evening wherever the party settles. The same rooms and terraces have held anniversaries, fashion shows and private dinners, and the villa's team runs the day from the first drink to the last.

Six suites and rooms sleep twelve. The Inspiration and Serenity suites, the largest, with mosaic floors, each have a living room or a bedroom opening to a veranda over the sea. The Studio Suite has its own external entrance. The Desire Junior Suite and the Curiosity Deluxe Room share a large panoramic terrace, and the Ecstasy Deluxe Room has a terrace of its own beside the bathroom. The furnishings were made by Italian artisans in 2019 around the villa's antiques, and every room is air-conditioned.

NEXST is the villa's restaurant, its name a nest and a step forward, and Executive Chef Enrico Ruggiero, who has cooked in leading kitchens in Italy and abroad, reinterprets Campanian dishes with seasonal local produce. There is a tasting menu and an à la carte of seasonal dishes and house specialities, and the restaurant takes bookings for an aperitif, a visit with an aperitif, lunch and dinner, so a wedding party can eat here on the days around the wedding.

The villa is at Via dei Fusco 20 in Ravello, reached on foot from the main square: along the lane beside the walls of Villa Rufolo, through the short tunnel, then left and immediately right by Hotel Rufolo to the gate. A second route follows the signs for Villa Cimbrone, turns by Villa Eva along the drive past Villa Amore and climbs a short flight of steps to the entrance.
