18th-century heritage hotel above the sea · Vietri sul Mare, Amalfi Coast
An 18th-century palazzo above the sea at Vietri sul Mare, where intimate weddings move between frescoed salons, lemon-scented terraces and gardens over the Amalfi Coast.
Palazzo Suriano is a noble 18th-century palazzo, now a heritage hotel and wedding venue, set on the sheer rock face above the sea at Vietri sul Mare. It looks over the Gulf of Salerno and the Amalfi Coast from luxuriant terraced gardens with wide sea views. The interiors have been restored and keep their original frescoes, neoclassical detailing, antique mirrors and fine period pieces. Tiled courtyards and sea-swept balconies recur through the house. The house is a private home in spirit rather than a formal hotel, and weddings here are intimate, planned for small gatherings rather than large crowds.
A wedding at Palazzo Suriano moves between lemon-scented terraces, tiled courtyards and frescoed halls. Its style is rooted in neoclassical grace, softened by Mediterranean warmth and timeworn beauty. The house can be taken for exclusive use, and it suits celebrations that run over several days. Vietri sul Mare is the first village of the Amalfi Coast, known across the world for its hand-painted ceramics, with countless workshops and boutiques. Editorial and cinematic photography suits the setting, from the sunlit gardens to the architectural details and tiled backdrops. It suits couples who prefer the enduring to the trendy and want slow weddings where every frame is considered, whether an intimate elopement, a fashion-forward editorial or a whole weekend of celebration.

A vine-draped balustrade overlooking the sea, the grand staircase softened with flowers and a hidden garden nook in the morning light are the most photogenic spots for a ceremony, and ceremonies here are typically symbolic. Intimate vow renewals and elopements suit the house as well. A ceremony can also be held nearby, in a local town hall or a historic church just minutes away. Help with paperwork and administrative procedures is among the services.

Outdoor celebrations run across the cascading gardens and panoramic terraces, where up to 90 guests can dine, dance and toast beneath the stars among lemon trees. The spaces include the grand staircase, frescoed salons, a lemon grove courtyard and a panoramic terrace. Indoors, the heritage salons hold seated receptions. Music for the ceremony and for the reception dinner is among the services, alongside flowers, decoration and stationery. Couples are free to work with their own planner, florist, photographer or band.

The rooms have vaulted ceilings, hand-painted tiles from Vietri, antique mirrors and balconies that open to morning light and the sea breeze. They are lived in rather than themed. Spouses and guests can be accommodated on site, often over a weekend of welcome drinks on the terrace, the main event and a farewell lunch. In the library, guests can play chess or cards or browse antiquarian books, and old shellac records play through 1920s gramophone speakers.

Catering is in house, and the personal chef prepares lunch or dinner with typical products of Campania and the Amalfi Coast. Aperitivos are served among the lemon trees and antipasti on majolica platters. The main course might be fresh scialatielli with clams or slow-cooked lamb, paired with local wines. Dinner can be served under the stars or in a salon where chandeliers flicker like candlelight. A wedding cake is among the services.
