17th-century exclusive-use villa near Siena, Chianti Classico
5.03 reviewsVilla di Catignano is a 17th-century villa among the vineyards of Chianti Classico, 8 km from Siena, with an Italian garden, a private chapel, a pool and apartments for a whole wedding party.
Villa di Catignano stands on a cypress-shaded hill in the Chianti Classico wine region, 8 km north east of Siena, within 600 acres of vineyards and olive groves. Monsignor Lodovico Sergardi, a writer who published under the name Quinto Settano, built it at the end of the 17th century, and the estate had belonged to the Sergardi family since the 1500s. The entrance hall still carries the family coat of arms, and the frescoed rooms above it are now furnished as apartments.
A double flight of steps leads from the villa to the Giardino all'Italiana, where box-edged beds, lemon trees in terracotta pots and the statues of the Four Seasons set the scene for ceremonies and aperitivo. The private chapel hosts Anglican or Protestant services, and the courtyard and terrace serve for dinners. Indoors, the vaulted Tinaia Hall and the Grey Hall give cover for larger receptions. The whole party can stay on the estate, and a 15-metre pool looks across the hills to the towers of Siena.

Monsignor Lodovico Sergardi, a writer who published as Quinto Settano, built the villa at the end of the 17th century. The Sergardi family estate, then called Clatinianum, already stood here in the 1500s, and the entrance hall still carries the family coat of arms and its motto, Expertus fidelem.

A double flight of steps leads to the Giardino all'Italiana, laid out in three sections with box-edged beds, lemon trees in terracotta pots and the Four Seasons statues. A private chapel and the courtyard of the villa and fattoria complete the ceremony and dinner settings.

The estate sits among 600 acres of vineyards and olive groves, with the towers of Siena on the horizon. Guests can walk, run or cycle the surrounding hills, or arrange wine tours and tastings in Chianti Classico.

Three garden sections with box hedges, lemon trees and the Four Seasons statues, open in winter as well, with a belvedere at the end of a cypress avenue.
An old chapel on the estate for Anglican or Protestant ceremonies, with symbolic ceremonies and blessings held among the garden statues.

The restored Tinaia Hall has brick vaults and terracotta floors and seats 120 for dinner. The Grey Hall seats 80, or 120 for cocktails.
A large terrace and the courtyard of the villa and fattoria host breakfasts, lunches and dinners outdoors.

A 15 m pool inside a privacy fence, with a gazebo and seating, looking across the Chianti hills to Siena.
