Horace Walpole's Gothic Revival villa on the Thames, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, London
Strawberry Hill House is Horace Walpole's Gothic Revival villa in Twickenham, where couples marry in the Gallery beneath a gilded fan vault and celebrate in the Waldegrave Suite in the same grounds.
Strawberry Hill House is Horace Walpole's Gothic Revival villa in Twickenham, begun in 1749 on the bank of the Thames and regarded as the prototype of Strawberry Hill Gothic. The Strawberry Hill Trust, formed in 2002, restored the house over a decade, and it reopened to the public in October 2010. Couples marry in the Gallery, completed in 1763 beneath a gilded papier-mache fan vault, which is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 84 guests.
The celebration moves to the Waldegrave Suite, a St Mary's University venue in the same grounds, which seats 105 for the wedding breakfast and holds 200 for an evening party. The garden is Grade II* listed, with a lime grove for drinks and space for a marquee of up to 150. The house is hired dry from 9am to 5pm, so catering comes from an approved list, and there are no bedrooms, only rooms in which to dress. Strawberry Hill station is a few minutes' walk, and central London is about 40 minutes by train.

Strawberry Hill House was begun in 1749 by Horace Walpole on the bank of the Thames at Twickenham. Its battlements, pinnacles and painted glass made it the prototype of the style that became known as Strawberry Hill Gothic, and it anticipated the Gothic Revival of the nineteenth century.

By the turn of the millennium the house was fragile and fading. The Strawberry Hill Trust, formed in 2002, restored it over a decade at a cost of ten million pounds, and the house reopened to the public in October 2010. Wedding fees help to fund the next stage of the restoration.

The Gallery was completed in 1763 and is licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 84 guests. A gilded papier-mache fan vault, copied from Westminster Abbey, rises above crimson damask walls and a run of gold canopies.

After the ceremony the party walks to the Waldegrave Suite, a St Mary's University venue in the same grounds, which seats 105 for the wedding breakfast and holds 200 for an evening party. Drinks are served in the Grade II* listed garden beneath the lime grove, and the house is hired dry, so you bring your own caterer from an approved list.
