A hotel built around books

The Library stands on a 6,400-square-metre plot of heritage land on Chaweng Beach, with a 50-metre beachfront. The idea came from a love of books, and the architecture is semi-minimalist, in white, red, black and grey. The buildings were designed without bulldozers so that the old trees could stay, and many rooms look out through them to the sea.

The Red Pool, tiled in orange, yellow and deep red, sits between The Lib, a reading room of more than 1,400 books, and The Page, the beachfront restaurant serving Thai and international dishes.

Five ways to marry

Weddings are planned around five themes: Bohemian Romance, Tropical Bloom, Ultimate Chic, Island Reverie and Southern Affair. The last is a traditional Thai ceremony with a monk blessing, water-pouring and a long drum parade. Ceremonies and receptions take place on the beach, at the Red and Long Pool, in the garden or at The Page, for up to 80 guests. The Lib suits Thai ceremonies of up to 30.

At the table

Catering is in-house. The Drawing Room serves Samuian dishes and afternoon tea, and breakfast can be laid on the beach. Outside food and drink needs the hotel’s consent and a corkage fee.

Where to stay

The accommodation ranges from studios and family suites to private pool villas. The Bookmark is a 102-square-metre room close to the sea, and the Secret Pool Villas, at 220 and 347 square metres, have private pools. The Editor and The Writer are adults-only villas: The Writer, at 359 square metres, has sea views and direct beach access, with a library, an outdoor cinema and a private gym.
