Eighteenth-century relais with Spa Suites and vineyard views near Cortona, Tuscany
5.03 reviewsLa Corte dei Papi is an eighteenth-century residence near Cortona with fifteen rooms and Spa Suites, gardens, a pool and a Renaissance-style wedding room, taken for exclusive use.
La Corte dei Papi is an eighteenth-century noble residence on the hills outside Cortona, in eastern Tuscany. Honey-coloured stone surrounds a courtyard, and the grounds hold olive and pine trees, flower beds and a large pool with a terrace. The Val di Chiana vineyards fall away below the property, and Cortona itself lies a few kilometres off.
Weddings are held on an exclusive-use basis, so the fifteen rooms and Spa Suites, the gardens, the pool and both dining spaces are given over to the couple and their guests. Blessing and symbolic ceremonies take place in the gardens or in the indoor room, which is decorated in the Renaissance style; legal civil ceremonies are held at the Cortona comune. The kitchen prepares Tuscan dishes each morning, from pasta and bread to the wedding cake, with menus written for the occasion. Spa Suites add private vineyard gardens, a Turkish bath and a Jacuzzi. Florence is about an hour away and Perugia thirty minutes.

The house dates from the 1700s and stands on rolling hills a few kilometres from Cortona, the hill town that Frances Mayes made famous. Gardens planted with olive trees, pines and flowers surround a honey-stone courtyard, and a large pool with a terrace sits among them.

Weddings here are held on one condition, that the estate is taken in full. Couples and guests share the gardens, the pool, the outdoor restaurant and an indoor wedding room decorated in the Renaissance style, and the team can introduce local planners, florists and photographers.

The kitchen turns out pasta, bread and wedding cakes each morning, using ingredients chosen for freshness. Menus are written for the wedding and the table moves into the gardens when the season allows.

The most private rooms have their own garden facing the vineyards, a Turkish bath, a wide Jacuzzi and four multi-sensory showers, so the stay becomes a retreat in itself.

La Corte dei Papi stands in Loc. Pergo, a few kilometres from Cortona, the Etruscan hill town immortalised by Frances Mayes in Under the Tuscan Sun. Florence is about an hour away, Siena and San Gimignano an hour's drive, and the wine towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino about thirty minutes, with the vineyards of the Val di Chiana spreading out below the estate.

I cannot recommend a trip to Relias La Corte Dei Papi enough! The property is beautiful, serene, and idyllic for a Tuscan getaway. We had dinner on site all three nights of our stay, which was always incredible and it was so nice to not have to leave the property. Also during our stay my husband and I took a cooking class with one of their chefs which was so fun and one of the highlights of our trips. David and his entire staff are wonderful and were extremely helpful throughout our stay.
