Marrying in Big Sur & Carmel
Big Sur is the 90-mile stretch of California's Highway 1 between Carmel and San Simeon where the Santa Lucia Mountains drop directly into the Pacific. The coastline here has no comparable equivalent in the continental United States. The combination of sea-cliff scale, old-growth redwood canyons, and perpetual coastal fog creates an atmosphere that photographers describe as ungovernable and extraordinary.
The venue market is deliberately small. Post Ranch Inn has 40 guest rooms and does not admit children under 18. Ventana Big Sur has 59 rooms and was rebuilt after the 2020 Dolan Fire. Together they handle the majority of Big Sur's luxury wedding calendar. This scarcity is intentional; it is why couples book 18 months out.
Carmel-by-the-Sea and Carmel Valley extend the destination south. The Lodge at Pebble Beach and Bernardus Lodge both offer larger-format weddings with ocean or vineyard settings respectively. The town of Carmel itself has a 1-mile beach, a historic mission, and a village scale that makes it one of the most charming small towns in California.
The fog is not a liability. It rolls in from the Pacific in the early morning, burns off by noon most days in summer and autumn, and returns at sunset. Ceremony photographs in the marine layer have a quality of light that clear days cannot replicate. Experienced Big Sur photographers plan around it.

June Gloom (thick marine layer in the mornings) is real from May through June and can last until midday. July to October is the clearest and most predictable window. Highway 1 landslide closures are possible after heavy winter rain; check CalTrans status for any January to April travel.

The areas of Big Sur & Carmel
Big Sur Coast
Post Ranch Inn, Ventana, cliff-edge ceremony sites, and the Bixby Bridge backdrop. Entirely nature-led, with no services for miles. The most dramatic and logistically demanding setting in this region.
Carmel-by-the-Sea
Village scale, a 1-mile white sand beach, the historic Carmel Mission, boutique hotels and galleries. Walkable and well-serviced. The practical base for larger guest groups who travel to Big Sur for the ceremony and photography.
Carmel Valley
Inland, warmer and sunnier than the coast. Bernardus Lodge, wine tasting rooms, and a more agricultural setting. 20 minutes from the village. The best choice for couples who want California sunshine rather than coastal fog.
Pebble Beach
The Pebble Beach Resorts campus, with The Lodge, ocean-side golf ceremony sites, and the most formal event format in this region.
What venues are like
Cliff-Edge Resort Ceremony
Post Ranch Inn and Ventana offer ceremony setups on cliff-edge promontories above the Pacific with no guests visible from outside. Total privacy. The most photographed ceremony format on the California coast.
Redwood Grove Ceremony
Ceremony settings within old-growth redwood groves at several Big Sur properties. Filtered canopy light and complete shelter from coastal wind. A quieter, more intimate alternative to the cliff-edge format.
Golf Course and Ocean Ceremony
Pebble Beach Resorts, with ceremony on the cliff-side fairways and a Pacific backdrop. The most formal venue format in the region, suited to larger weddings with traditional structure and full resort production.
Carmel Valley Vineyard
Bernardus and nearby wineries offer vineyard settings with the warmer inland climate. Best for couples who want California wine country rather than the coastal drama of Big Sur.

Highway 1 through Big Sur is a single-lane coastal road; large vehicles cannot navigate it and journey times are slow. Private car transfers are the only practical option for Big Sur properties.
Marrying legally in the United States
Applies to: Marriage law is set by each state
The United States has no single national marriage law. A couple obtains a marriage licence in the state where they will marry, through that state's vital records office or its county offices, and the licence expires between 30 days and a year after issue, depending on the state. Age, waiting periods, identification, witnesses and who may officiate differ by state, so the couple should check the state they choose.
- 1Before travelling
Check the state's rules
Contact the vital records office in the state where you will marry for its requirements, including the identification it accepts from non-residents and any waiting period.
- 2Shortly before the wedding
Obtain the licence
Apply for the marriage licence in the state of the ceremony. A licence expires within 30 days to a year depending on the state, so time it close to the date; if it lapses before the wedding, a new one is needed.
- 3The day
The ceremony
The wedding takes place in that state, and the licence is completed and returned for the certificate to be issued, as the state directs.

Already married at home?5 Star view
Because the licence and law belong to the state, many couples marry legally at home or at a courthouse and hold the celebration here with a ceremony of their own choosing. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens travelling within their own country need no visa, ESTA or entry formalities: the usual identification for domestic travel applies, and the couple apply for a licence in the state where they will marry.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British citizens need an ESTA or a visa to enter or transit the United States. ESTA is for travellers under the Visa Waiver Program, which allows stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business, and needs an e-passport; the passport must be valid for the length of the stay. You may not be eligible if you have been arrested, have a criminal record, have been refused entry or deported, have overstayed before, or were in certain countries (including Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen since March 2011, or Cuba since 12 January 2021); in that case apply for a visa. An ESTA does not guarantee entry.
Other nationalities
Citizens of Visa Waiver Program countries travel with an approved ESTA and an e-passport, for up to 90 days. All other nationalities need a US visa applied for through the US embassy or consulate in their country.
The state decides who may marry and how. The marriage law of the state of the ceremony applies, and the couple should confirm it with that state's vital records office.

Accommodation
Big Sur has very limited rooms. Carmel and Pebble Beach accommodate larger groups. Booking lead times of 12 to 18 months are standard for peak season dates at Post Ranch Inn and Ventana.
At the table
Big Sur's remoteness means the restaurant universe is small. Post Ranch Inn and Ventana have the best kitchens on the coast. Carmel has a stronger independent restaurant scene.
Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn
Cliff-edge restaurant with four-course prix fixe and panoramic Pacific windows. Private dining available for wedding parties. One of the most dramatically sited restaurants in California.
Cielo at Ventana
Meadow-view terrace, California coastal cuisine, private wedding dinners. The on-property option for Ventana guests and one of the more relaxed Big Sur dining formats.
Anton and Michel
Carmel-by-the-Sea institution for over 50 years. Private rooms available for rehearsal dinners. Classic French-California cuisine with reliable execution and an established wedding-weekend track record.
Pebble Beach Food and Wine
Annual spring festival that transforms the resort campus. Proximity for dates near the event adds a wine-and-food dimension to the wedding weekend that few other California venues can match.
What planners tell couples
Highway 1 Closures
The coastal highway through Big Sur is subject to landslide closures, particularly after heavy winter and spring rain. The Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge closure of 2017 lasted months. Always have a backup transfer route and check CalTrans District 5 status before any winter or spring event.
Booking Lead Time
Post Ranch Inn and Ventana are the most booked properties per available room in California. Weekend dates in peak season (July to October) require 12 to 24 months of advance booking. Do not approach Big Sur with less than 12 months of planning time.
No Cell Service in Big Sur
Mobile reception is non-existent in most of Big Sur. Satellite-based WiFi at the properties is functional but guests should be briefed on digital disconnection. This is often cited as a feature by couples rather than a limitation.
Wind
Coastal wind at ceremony sites can be significant, particularly in spring and early summer. Lightweight ceremony decor and hair management are practical concerns. Post-noon ceremonies in the August to October window tend to be calmer.
