Private members' club in an 18th-century Robert Adam house · Mayfair, London
An 18th-century Mayfair mansion that became a members' club in 1935, with a Robert Adam ballroom, a hidden courtyard and Art Deco bedrooms.
In 1935, Lansdowne House was re-imagined as a private members' club, welcoming men and women with equal status from the outset. The building's story stretches back to 1763, when the mansion first rose just off Berkeley Square, and it has since grown into a club with social, sporting, dining, business and accommodation spaces under one roof. Neoclassical architecture of the 18th century sits beside later Art Deco interiors, so the corridors, bars and bedrooms follow one visual thread. The Grade II* listed Robert Adam ballroom is the historic core, with a landscaped Courtyard behind it.
The Lansdowne Club arranges weddings through a run of named rooms, each with its own role in the day. The ceremony is held in the Robert Adam Ballroom or the Adam Room, or outdoors in the Courtyard. The drinks reception gathers in the Long Gallery, which adjoins the Ballroom and overlooks the Courtyard, or outside when the weather allows. The Crush Hall is where the photographs and the cake-cutting are taken. The wedding breakfast, the speeches and the first dance are in the Ballroom, and the Shelburne Room and the Findlay Room take the smaller celebrations and the dinner the night before.

The Robert Adam Ballroom holds the ceremony beneath its 18th-century plasterwork, at the heart of the Grade II* listed building. The Adam Room is the smaller alternative, where frescoes and a period fireplace frame the vows. The landscaped Courtyard, with its retractable roof, takes an outdoor ceremony in any season. A ceremony here takes up to 150 guests.

The Ballroom is the club's largest room and the setting for the wedding breakfast, the speeches and the evening party, with room for a standing reception of up to 200. The Long Gallery adjoins it and overlooks the Courtyard, so the drinks move between gallery and garden. The Courtyard itself takes the drinks and the photographs when it is not holding the ceremony. The Shelburne Room, with its own anteroom, takes a small celebration, and the Art Deco Findlay Room a dinner. The Crush Hall, with its original 18th-century details and chandelier, is where the cake is cut and the formal portraits taken.

The club's rooms and suites sit above and around the event rooms, so wedding guests stay in the same Mayfair building. The bedrooms are Art Deco in spirit, in dusky rose, pale leaf green or soft heather blue with gold accents. The Deluxe Suite, with a separate living room, takes the wedding night or a longer stay, and the Deluxe Junior Suite sleeps a family. The wedding package includes a suite for the couple, and overnight guests have a full English breakfast in the Dining Room.

Executive Head Chef Henry Brosi writes the wedding menus, and The Library by Henry Brosi takes a chef's-table dinner for a small party. The Art Deco Dining Room and the Piano Bar take the formal meals and the cocktails, the Courtyard Brasserie the outdoor lunches, and the Round Room Cocktail Bar the late drinks.

We had tours of the venue, incredible tastings, and all comms via email were responded to in full, in a prompt manner. The team were extremely professional and kind. The kind of service you would expect at Claridges. They were accommodating and even helped to get our table centerpieces sorted when I ran out of time! The food and drinks were delicious, the venue PERFECT for any size wedding and reasonably priced for London. They are very detail oriented and made my dream wedding possible. Especially considering we downsized from 90 to 20 guests. Lovely experience which I will never forget. They even made my favourite cocktail on arrival for our guests!
