Art Deco grand hotel on Brook Street · Mayfair, London
5.01 reviewAn English Heritage-listed Ballroom on the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street in Mayfair, where weddings take place amid restored Art Deco rooms.
Claridge’s is a hotel at the corner of Brook Street and Davies Street, in the heart of the London district of Mayfair. Its English Heritage-listed Ballroom has hosted society weddings, state banquets and grand balls, and carefully restored Art Deco features keep the exuberance of the Roaring Twenties alive in the rooms around it. For generations the hotel has been the setting for gatherings in London, from royal celebrations to milestone birthdays, and every event becomes part of its enduring story. The Royal Suite pays tribute to the hotel’s royal connections, and the whole hotel can be taken for exclusive use.
The hotel’s history includes dazzling royal balls and sophisticated cocktail parties, and The Fumoir, a bar discreetly tucked away in the Art Deco interior, is where those in the know have enjoyed a quiet drink in London. Claridge’s Flowers designs the floral arrangements, and a choreographer in residence is on hand for weddings. Outside, Mayfair offers boutiques, galleries and leafy squares. Bond Street’s treasures and hidden cafés sit at the doorstep, so the neighbourhood is part of the day for guests staying on or arriving from across the city, and the hotel’s own state banquets and royal receptions show a long familiarity with formal occasions.

Ceremonies can be held in the Ballroom, which suits a lavish wedding breakfast as well as an intimate ceremony just for two, or in the mezzanine Highgrove Room, an intimate wedding venue. Each of the hotel’s rooms can be used for saying ‘I do’, and a ceremony can also be arranged across a combination of spaces. The hotel has a history of state banquets and royal receptions, so formal occasions of every size are familiar ground.

The Ballroom is on the ground floor and measures 243.5 square metres, and standing receptions take up to 500 guests. The Ballroom Reception, also on the ground floor, has marble flooring, mirrored walls, a private entrance and a cloakroom. The French Salon, with Art Deco tassels, cherubs and a restored mural, connects to the Drawing Room, which has open fireplaces and the Lady in Blue portrait alongside modern technology. On the mezzanine, the Clarence Room is a versatile space for weddings, parties and meetings and connects to the St James Room. The Windsor Room, the Boardroom and the Buckingham Room are also on the mezzanine, with natural daylight and views over Brook Street or floor-to-ceiling windows.

The Royal Suite, Mayfair’s Royal Retreat, is rich in handcrafted details, a place where heritage, artistry and modern luxury meet. Bedrooms and suites more widely offer space, style and a high level of service. For larger guest lists, the hotel presents the couple with the keys to a complimentary suite for their wedding night, and rooms with special rates are available for guests.

Menus run from refined canapés to seasonally inspired wedding banquets and can be adapted to guest preferences and dietary requirements. L’Epicerie seats guests around the chef’s table in the open kitchen, and The Painter’s Room is a private dining room with an Art Deco setting. The Foyer Private Dining Room is available through the day, from breakfast and lunch to afternoon tea and dinner. The Snuggery, beside Claridge’s Bar, is a private room for lunches and cocktail gatherings. The hotel has a celebrated cellar and expert sommeliers.

From the moment I arrived, Claridge’s delivered what few places can: a sense of timeless ease. The welcome was effortless, my suite a masterstroke in understated luxury, and every detail, from the monogrammed linen to the mirrored hallways, whispered heritage without feeling dated. Breakfast in the Foyer was a highlight: elegant, unhurried, and quietly theatrical. What stayed with me most, though, was the service, instinctive, discreet, and impossibly polished. Claridge’s doesn’t dazzle with noise; it captivates with restraint. A true lesson in what it means to host, not just accommodate.
