Marrying in Puglia

Puglia has changed the geography of destination weddings. What was once a remote southern Italian region is now among the most sought-after locations in Europe, sought for exactly the qualities that kept it undiscovered: fortified farmhouses surrounded by ancient olive groves, whitewashed hill towns, and a quality of silence that is very difficult to find elsewhere.

The region is long and varied. The Valle d'Itria sits at its heart, a valley of trulli, dry-stone walls, and working masserie that have become the dominant venue type in Italian destination weddings. Further south, Salento and Lecce offer baroque architecture and Adriatic coastline. In the north, the Gargano promontory provides dramatic sea cliffs and mountain forest.

Puglia suits couples who want something visually singular. There is nothing else that looks like a trullo complex at dusk, or a masseria courtyard lit for a dinner under a canopy of olive trees. The region has developed a mature events infrastructure but remains less saturated than Tuscany, with better availability and more competitive venue pricing at equivalent quality levels.

Best months
May, June, September, and October

April and late October
Peak season
July and August

Puglia holds heat well into autumn. October weddings are increasingly popular: temperatures stay above 20°C, the harvest is underway, and the light has a warmth and quality that rivals September. July and August regularly exceed 38°C, which makes long outdoor ceremonies impractical. Sunset ceremonies at these times work well at coastal venues.

Also in Puglia

Valle d'Itria

The centre of the Puglia wedding market. Home to Alberobello, Locorotondo, and Cisternino. Trulli clusters, whitewashed towns, and the highest concentration of premium masserie. The most requested area for couples choosing Puglia.

Ostuni & the Murge

The White City sits on a hilltop above the coastal plain. Masserie here are larger in scale, set against a landscape of flat olive groves that stretches to the Adriatic. Suits larger guest counts with extensive accommodation on site.

Salento & Lecce

The heel of the boot. Baroque architecture in Lecce, coastal masserie near Otranto and Gallipoli. More remote from the airports than Valle d'Itria. Suits couples who want privacy and an Adriatic setting.

Gargano

Northern Puglia, a promontory of sea cliffs, forest, and fishing villages. Very limited venue pool but extraordinary scenery. Rarely used for destination weddings, which means complete exclusivity for those who seek it.

Kinds of venue5 Star view

What venues are like

Counted The Puglia venues by kind, counted from the venue records when this page loaded.

Masseria

The defining venue type in Puglia. Originally fortified farm estates built to protect against raids, now converted to luxury wedding properties. Stone-walled courtyards, pools, on-site accommodation across multiple restored buildings. The best masseriae feel untouched from the outside and impeccably finished within.

Trullo complex

Clusters of trulli, the conical stone-roofed dwellings unique to the Valle d'Itria. Intimate in capacity, visually extraordinary. Most accommodate 20 to 60 guests. The ceremony setting is unlike anything else in Europe.

Palazzo

Historic noble palaces within Lecce, Ostuni, and Locorotondo. Baroque facades, internal courtyards, carved stone staircases. Suits couples who want an urban setting within walking distance of the town. Smaller capacity than a masseria but high on architectural drama.

Coastal estate

Rare but highly sought. Properties with direct access to the Adriatic or Ionian coastline, mostly in Salento. Combines the masseria model with sea views and private beach access. Very limited supply, book 24 months ahead.

Getting there

Airports and transfers

  • Bari (BRI) The main Puglia airport. Direct routes from London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, and most major European hubs. 50 to 80 minutes from Valle d'Itria and Ostuni venues.
  • Brindisi (BDS) Closer to Salento and Lecce. Lower-cost carrier routes from the UK and northern Europe. 30 to 60 minutes from venues in the heel of Italy.

Puglia venues are typically 45 minutes to 90 minutes from Bari or Brindisi airport. Coach or minibus transfers for the wedding party are standard and straightforward to arrange. The region has a well-developed event transport network.

The lawReference

Marrying legally in Italy

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.

  1. 1
    Up to six months before

    The Atto Notorio

A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.

  2. 2
    Before you travel

    The Nulla Osta

The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.

  3. 3
    Before you travel

    Birth certificates

The original, with an apostille, and an official Italian translation that carries its own apostille.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.

Who needs a visa

Travelling from the United States

American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.

Travelling from the United Kingdom

British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.

Travelling from the Gulf

Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.

Other nationalities

EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.

At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Accommodation

Puglia's masseria estates offer some of Italy's most complete wedding accommodation, with working farm buildings converted to boutique hotels sleeping the entire wedding party on one property.

Food and wine5 Star view

At the table

Puglia has one of Italy's most distinctive regional cuisines: raw seafood, hand-rolled orecchiette, burrata from Andria, and Primitivo and Negroamaro wines from some of the oldest vineyards in Europe.

Orecchiette con cime di rapa

Small ear-shaped pasta with turnip tops, anchovies, and chilli. Made by hand in the old town of Bari, where women still sell it fresh at fold-out tables on Via dell'Arco Basso. The most emblematic dish in Pugliese cooking; simple, bitter, and completely specific to this region.

Burrata di Andria

The original burrata, invented in Andria in the 1950s, is a sealed pouch of mozzarella skin filled with stracciatella and cream. Eaten within hours of production at room temperature with nothing but bread and good olive oil. Caseificio Olanda in Andria is the reference producer.

Crudo di mare, Taranto

Raw sea urchin, oysters, mussels, prawns, and clams served directly from ice with lemon. The Mar Piccolo of Taranto has one of the most productive shellfish ecosystems in the Mediterranean. The fish market in Taranto's old town on weekend mornings is the best place to encounter this culture directly.

Primitivo di Manduria

Deep, high-alcohol red wine from old bush-trained Primitivo vines in the Salento. Rich, dark fruit, sometimes raisined, and suited to the grilled and braised meats of a Pugliese wedding banquet. Felline and Gianfranco Fino are the two benchmark producers.

What planners tell couples

Brindisi and Bari both serve the region

Brindisi (BDS) is closer to Lecce and the Salento. Bari (BRI) is the better gateway for the Valle d'Itria and Fasano masserie. Both have direct connections from the UK and northern Europe. Check which airport is closer to your specific venue before advising guests on routing.

Heat in July and August

Southern Puglia in July and August frequently exceeds 38 degrees Celsius. Outdoor ceremonies require shade, good timing (early morning or after 6pm), and adequate hydration for guests. May, June, and September offer significantly more comfortable outdoor conditions. October is warm and quiet, with the added interest of the olive harvest.

Masseria buyout terms vary

Some maserie require a full accommodation buyout (all rooms booked) as a condition of event hire. Others charge a venue hire fee separately from accommodation. The total cost structure varies substantially between properties. Ask your planner to clarify the exact commercial terms before comparing venues on headline price.

Matera is 90 minutes away

The ancient sassi cave city of Matera, European Capital of Culture in 2019, is under 90 minutes from most central Puglia masserie. A pre-wedding excursion or a post-wedding extension to Matera adds one of the most extraordinary historical landscapes in southern Europe to the trip.

Questions couples ask

Marrying in Puglia

What is a masseria and why is it the main venue type in Puglia?

A masseria is a fortified farm estate, originally built to protect workers and livestock from coastal raids during the medieval and early modern period. The thick stone walls, enclosed courtyards, and agricultural setting that served a defensive purpose now make these properties extraordinarily suited to weddings. Most premium masseriae include exclusive use, on-site accommodation for 20 to 60 guests, private ceremony and reception spaces, and a resident team for catering and events.

What is the best time of year for a Puglia wedding?

May, June, September, and October are the optimal months. September is the most popular among planners: temperatures are comfortable for outdoor ceremonies, the harvest season creates a lively atmosphere, and vendor availability is better than in summer. October is increasingly requested, particularly for coastal venues where temperatures remain warm. July and August are the busiest months but the heat regularly exceeds 38°C, which creates challenges for long outdoor ceremonies.

What is the difference between Valle d'Itria and Salento?

Valle d'Itria is the inland valley between Bari and Brindisi, home to trulli, dry-stone walls, and the largest concentration of luxury masserie. It is the heart of the Puglia wedding market. Salento is the southern peninsula, roughly from Taranto to the heel, with Lecce as its main city and Adriatic and Ionian coastline on both sides. Salento is more remote from the airports, quieter in character, and suits couples who specifically want a coastal setting or Lecce's baroque architecture.

Do I need a local wedding planner for a Puglia wedding?

A local planner is strongly recommended. Puglia planners manage masseria relationships, coordinate the local supplier network (many top photographers and florists are Puglia-based), handle Italian bureaucracy and legal documentation, and understand the logistical realities of the region in ways that are not possible to replicate remotely. Most premium masseriae operate with a preferred planner list.

Which airport is closest to Puglia wedding venues?

For Valle d'Itria and Ostuni venues, Bari Karol Wojtyla (BRI) is the primary gateway, with direct routes from London Gatwick, Amsterdam, Paris CDG, Frankfurt, and most European hubs. For venues in Salento and around Lecce, Brindisi (BDS) is closer and serves several low-cost routes from the UK and northern Europe. Most couples fly into both airports to accommodate guests on different routes.

How does a foreign couple marry legally in Italy?

A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court.
