About Wickham House

A Grade II listed manor in Berkshire, kept as a lived-in family home, with a church, barn, walled garden and marquee lawn in its grounds.

Wickham House in Newbury

Wickham House is a Grade II listed Georgian manor with a Victorian Gothic façade, standing in Berkshire about an hour west of London. It is a family home and keeps a lived-in, welcoming feel, as far from an institutional venue as a venue can be. The estate is a private one, built around privacy and careful, professional organisation. The house and its grounds look out across the Kennet Valley towards the downs. Weddings share the estate with corporate retreats, film shoots and private functions, and the house has only recently opened its doors to weddings and private events.

Within the grounds are a church beside the house, a newly built oak-framed barn, an architect-designed walled garden, an outdoor pavilion and pool, and a lawn for a marquee. A wedding here can use the whole estate rather than a single room, moving from one setting to the next through the day. Marquees, catering and glamping are arranged through a hand-picked group of preferred partners, so the practical side of the day is in the hands of suppliers who know the estate. The private estate setting, the listed house and its gardens give the day a country-house character without the formality of a hotel.

Ceremonies

Ceremonies in church, barn and walled garden

Ceremonies can take place in the church, which stands only a few steps from the house, or indoors in the newly built oak-framed barn, or outdoors in the walled garden, which was designed by an architect. Wickham House lists a church adjacent to the house, an indoor ceremony setting and an outdoor ceremony setting, so a couple can choose between a church, a barn and a garden for the ceremony itself.

Receptions

Marquee receptions and the barn

Wedding receptions are held in a privately hired marquee, positioned on a plot of land flanked by a grand avenue of oak trees. The marquee looks over the downs on one side and the main façade of the house on the other. Marquees can be hired through the preferred partner Covered Occasions, and the maximum guest number is 250. Before the wedding day, the barn is used for intimate rehearsal dinners, with a large open fire, a fully serviced bar and cloakroom facilities. The same space is available as a bridal changing suite.

Hotel rooms and glamping

Guests stay nearby at The Vineyard, a five-star hotel only a few minutes from the house, and at its sister hotel Donnington Valley, a little further on. Together the two hotels provide 160 rooms. In warmer months guests can also sleep in glamping tents in the grounds, through the preferred partner The Pop Up Hotel.

Catering with Real Cooking

Dining is at the heart of the Wickham House experience. The estate works in partnership with Real Cooking, a Berkshire caterer, and the catering is delivered with finesse and close attention to detail. The partnership sits alongside the other preferred suppliers the estate brings together for a wedding, so the food and the rest of the day are planned by people who work together.

September Wedding 2016

I said to my husband “Could you pinch me to see if I am dreaming?!” Because we truly could not believe we we were going to be married in such a beautiful location!! Wickham House is a wonderland for the senses. ... The grounds are radiant and bewitching. Everything so beautifully maintained. The flowers in the walled garden are so captivating, and overflowing with lavish colours that it completely staggered us and our guests on our magical day. ... Every enquiry we had was catered to with great efficiency and love by you all, which we so appreciated. ... Our wedding day itself was just incredible. It excelled all expectations.

August Wedding 2017

I want to let you know that the wedding of my husband’s nephew this weekend, was the most beautiful I’ve ever had the pleasure to attend…..and I’ve been to a few! There was nothing to find fault with. The setting, the gardens , the meal were all very lovely, but I really must mention your patient, charming and hardworking staff- every one a gem!
