Fells rise from still water in England's north-west, and the Lake District's settings reflect its Victorian and Edwardian past: lakeside hotels, some with private jetties, boathouses and ceremony gardens facing the water, country houses on higher ground looking over fells and valleys, and farmhouses and barns in the dales.
Windermere, England's largest natural lake, has Bowness nearby for guests, while Ullswater is quieter and can be reached by steamer. In the Langdale valley, farmhouses and barns stand in Herdwick sheep country with a mountain backdrop. Here a wedding is held between still water and high fell, in country that has inspired poets and painters for generations.

Planning a wedding in Lake District
How to marry here: the seasons, the areas, airports and transfers, where guests stay, the paperwork and what a wedding costs.
Marrying in the Lake District
Short answers from what the venues have told us.
Which lake should a couple choose?
Windermere has the most venues, the most hotels for overflow guests and the direct rail link from Manchester. Ullswater has fewer venues and a quieter, more private setting. Coniston and Grasmere suit smaller weddings. Guest numbers and the kind of weekend wanted decide the choice.
Can guests arrive at the venue by boat?
Yes, on Windermere and Ullswater. Private launches, wooden boats and chartered Ullswater steamers can carry the wedding party, and several Windermere venues have private jetties.
What happens if it rains on the wedding day?
Good Lake District venues plan for rain. Every licensed ceremony space has an indoor equivalent and every outdoor dining set-up has a covered fallback. The interiors of the Victorian hotels and country houses make an indoor wedding a full one.
