Belle-epoque grand hotel by Piazza della Repubblica, Rome
5.02 reviewsThe St. Regis Rome is a belle-epoque hotel opened by César Ritz in 1894, with gilded ballrooms for symbolic ceremonies and receptions and 161 rooms and suites in the centre of Rome.
The St. Regis Rome opened in 1894 under César Ritz, and it was the first hotel in the city to have electric light and en-suite bathrooms. A restoration completed in 2018 brought back its belle-epoque character, and the building now has 138 rooms and 23 suites beside Piazza della Repubblica, a short walk from the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps.
Weddings use the hotel's historic rooms rather than the whole building. The gilded Ritz Ballroom, with its frescoes, crystal chandeliers and gold leaf, is the principal space, joined by the Borromeo, Danieli and Venezia ballrooms and the Principe function rooms. Symbolic ceremonies suit up to around 150 guests, and a dinner can reach around 200. The legally binding civil marriage is arranged separately at the Rome comune. Lumen, the hotel's restaurant and cocktail bar, cooks refined Italian dishes, and a St. Regis butler looks after each guest. Rome Fiumicino airport is about 40 minutes away.

César Ritz opened the hotel in 1894, and it was the first in Rome to have electric light and en-suite bathrooms. A restoration completed in 2018 returned its belle-epoque interiors to their former richness, from frescoes and crystal chandeliers to gold leaf.

Couples can hold a symbolic ceremony under the frescoed ceilings, then sit down to a wedding breakfast or a dinner with dancing. The hotel's team designs each wedding around the couple, and the champagne sabering ritual opens the celebration.

Piazza della Repubblica is beside the hotel, with the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and the Quirinale a short walk away and the Colosseum and Roman Forum a little further. A wedding here can easily become a few days in the city.

Restored to its 1894 belle-époque splendour, with frescoed ceilings, crystal chandeliers and gold leaf, among the grandest rooms in Rome.

If you are doing Rome on a budget this place is not for you, but if you want a luxurious treat, you can not beat the St. Regis. If you are a Marriott points hoarder, use them here. Everything from the staff, the rooms, the public areas, just scrumptious. The beds, the toiletries, the service: wow, wow and wow. And the location is superb, not in the noisy tourist areas, but not too far either and super easy access to taxis and cars. We even walked there from the train station in about 10 minutes. Flat rate 55 Euro to the airport. From the front, downhill to all the tourist sites. Behind, the quieter area with great walkable restaurants. I wanted to cry when we left....
