Lutyens-designed hotel in London's literary quarter · Great Russell Street, Bloomsbury
A central London hotel behind a Lutyens-designed façade, where weddings can use a deconsecrated chapel, two historic halls, a literary library and a seasonal terrace
The Bloomsbury is a central London hotel behind a façade designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, in a building that began as the flagship of the Young Women's Christian Association. Behind the façade lie historic halls, a deconsecrated chapel, a library and a terrace that changes with the seasons, and each of them is its own setting for a celebration. The spaces also serve book launches and corporate meetings. The tone is a blend of old-world grandeur and contemporary sophistication, and the hotel hosts weddings alongside special occasions and private dining.
The literary side of the building runs through the Seamus Heaney Library, named after the Nobel Prize-winning Irish poet, playwright and translator, who was a regular guest at the hotel and opened the refurbished room in July 2011. Weddings are planned by a dedicated and experienced events team, who collaborate with couples from the ceremony to the celebration and shape each wedding around their own style and vision. The hotel also keeps a list of tried and trusted suppliers across photography, floristry, content creation, stationery, crockery, furniture hire, pop-up bar hire, hair and makeup, and dress design. Enquiries go through a wedding enquiry form and the Bloomsbury Wedding Team, and Dalloway Terrace also suits birthday dinners and baby showers.

The Chapel is a spectacular Lutyens-designed hall with double-height ceilings, original architectural elements, furnishings and chandeliers, and it sits next to the Seamus Heaney Library. The hotel has an outdoor ceremony setting. Dalloway Terrace is a setting for an intimate bridal shower around the wedding.

George V Hall is on the ground floor. Its wallpaper wraps the whole room in a lake scene of tropical botanicals and creatures from across the globe, a nod to King George V's travels, and large windows and hand-blown Waterford crystal chandeliers complete the room. Queen Mary Hall is on the second floor, with a lofty ceiling, Waterford crystal chandeliers, abundant natural light, a separate bar area and a custom Adam Ellis Studio wallpaper of a dusky English garden with soft pink skies, drifting clouds, birds and butterflies. The Seamus Heaney Library has book-lined, wood-panelled walls, Lutyens-designed spiderback chairs, parquet floors and a long oak table, and suits cocktail parties, afternoon teas and literary lunches. Dalloway Terrace has floral installations, heaters and a retractable roof. The hotel holds up to 140 guests.

Check-in is from 3 pm, with early check-in from midday for a fee, and check-out is by noon, with late check-out subject to availability and charges. A suite is provided for the happy couple, and the hotel has a gym or fitness room. The Bloomsbury Club Bar is on site, and it recommends booking.

The team behind the hotel's destination restaurant, Dalloway Terrace, creates menus for the halls, and the hotel can provide anything from break-out snacks to full-scale banquets from The Bloomsbury's kitchens. Seasonal menus include fresh classics, healthy options and treats. The Coral Room takes walk-ins, and Dalloway Terrace is best booked ahead.
