Marrying in Sardinia
Sardinia is Italy's most underrated luxury wedding destination. The island offers extraordinary natural landscape, granite boulders, turquoise water, white sand, cork oak forests, alongside a hospitality infrastructure built around the demands of the Mediterranean yachting and resort clientele.
The Costa Smeralda in the north-east was developed specifically for international luxury tourism in the 1960s. The result is a cluster of world-class hotels, private villa estates, and waterfront venues with an Aga Khan-era elegance that feels like nowhere else in Italy.
Beyond the Smeralda, Sardinia reveals a wilder character. Interior masserie, ancient nuraghe stone towers rising from scrubland, clifftop venues overlooking the Strait of Bonifacio, these are experiences available nowhere on mainland Italy.

What venues are like
Counted The Sardinia venues by kind, counted from the venue records when this page loaded.
Seafront Villa
Private estates with direct beach access on the Costa Smeralda, the Aga Khan Coast, and the Sulcis area. Typically exclusive hire for the full weekend with accommodation in restored buildings or contemporary villas. The most sought-after format in the Sardinian market.
Costa Smeralda Estate
Contemporary villas in the Porto Cervo and Cala di Volpe area. Built for the international jet set in the 1960s and since refined. High specification, excellent catering infrastructure, and a social register distinct from the rest of Sardinia.
Clifftop Venue
Properties on the cliff edges above the sea, particularly on the Emerald Coast and the Costa del Sud. Views over the Tyrrhenian from ceremony positions on natural rock terraces. Limited supply and early booking essential.
Converted Masseria
Farm estates converted to event venues. More common in the interior of the island, away from the coastal hotel market. Complete privacy and a genuine working estate atmosphere at prices well below the coastline properties.
Historic Watchtower
Sardinia's coastline is dotted with 16th-century Aragonese watchtowers built against pirate raids. Several are in private ownership and are used as the backdrop for ceremony photography. Unique to Sardinia and visually extraordinary.

Marrying legally in Italy
A foreign couple marries in a civil ceremony at the comune, the town hall, after presenting two documents for each partner: a Nulla Osta from their own country's authorities and an Atto Notorio sworn before an Italian consulate or court. Birth certificates are apostilled and carry an official Italian translation.
- 1Up to six months before
The Atto Notorio
A sworn statement that nothing prevents the marriage, signed with four witnesses who are not related to the couple, at the Italian consulate for your place of residence or at a court in Italy. It is valid for six months from signature and cannot be requested more than six months before the wedding.
- 2Before you travel
The Nulla Osta
The certificate of no impediment from your own country's authorities. British nationals apply by post to the British Embassy in Rome with a notice and an affirmation witnessed by a notary. American and Australian citizens obtain theirs from their embassy in Rome.
- 3Before you travel
Birth certificates
The original, with an apostille, and an official Italian translation that carries its own apostille.

Many couples complete the legal or religious marriage in their own country and hold the celebration here. A ceremony with no legal effect needs none of the steps above: the venue and the planner arrange it.
Who needs a visa
Travelling from the United States
American citizens visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period under Schengen rules. The European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation will be required of visa-exempt visitors, Americans included, once it is operating; the EU expects that in the last quarter of 2026.
Travelling from the United Kingdom
British passport holders visit Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, counted across the whole Schengen area. The passport must have been issued less than 10 years before arrival and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. The European Union's Entry/Exit System registers fingerprints and a photograph at the border on a first visit.
Travelling from the Gulf
Citizens of the United Arab Emirates travel to Italy without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, and will need the European Union's ETIAS travel authorisation once it is operating. Citizens of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need a Schengen short-stay visa, applied for through the Italian consulate or its visa centre; under European Commission rules, Saudi, Bahraini and Kuwaiti nationals who qualify can be issued a multiple-entry visa valid for five years. A resident of the Gulf who holds another passport follows the rule for that passport.
Other nationalities
EU and EEA nationals need no visa. Other nationalities check with the Italian embassy or consulate in their country.
At the border you may be asked for proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket and enough money for the stay.

Accommodation
Sardinia's luxury accommodation is concentrated on the Costa Smeralda in the northeast, with strong alternatives on the southern coast near Cagliari and on the quieter western shore.
At the table
Sardinian cuisine is one of the most distinctive and isolated in Italy, shaped by millennia of self-sufficiency: roast suckling pig, pane carasau flatbread, pecorino sardo cheese, and Cannonau wine are the foundation of the island's food identity.
Porceddu (roast suckling pig)
The defining dish of Sardinian celebrations. A young pig roasted on a spit over myrtle and juniper wood for four to six hours until the skin is crackling and the meat falls from the bone. Served at every serious Sardinian event, always with pane carasau. The Barbagia region in the mountainous interior is where the tradition is strongest; agriturismi in the Gennargentu foothills serve it as the centrepiece of multi-course set menus.
Malloreddus alla campidanese
Sardinia's distinctive gnocchi-like pasta (malloreddus, also called gnocchetti sardi), made with semolina and saffron, served with a slow-cooked pork and tomato ragù with pecorino sardo. The saffron in the pasta dough comes from Sardinia's own Crocus sativus cultivation, one of Italy's oldest saffron-growing traditions.
Vermentino di Gallura DOCG
Sardinia's only DOCG wine, produced in the Gallura zone of the northeast on granite soils near the Costa Smeralda. The white Vermentino is aromatic, textured, and peachy, with a mineral salinity from the granite. Sella e Mosca and Capichera are the two most internationally recognised producers. The correct wine for a seafood-led Costa Smeralda reception.
Cannonau di Sardegna DOC
The island's principal red wine variety, identical to the Grenache of southern France and Spain, but with a distinct Sardinian character from the old-vine, bush-trained cultivation in the hot granite interior. Argiolas near Cagliari and Gabbas in Nuoro are benchmark producers. Cannonau is increasingly recognised internationally as one of Italy's most age-worthy red wines.
What planners tell couples
Airport routing for the Costa Smeralda
Olbia Costa Smeralda (OLB) is the correct gateway for the northeast coast and Porto Cervo. It is 30 minutes from the Costa Smeralda hotels by private transfer. Cagliari Elmas (CAG) serves the south; Alghero (AHO) serves the northwest. For a Porto Cervo or Arzachena wedding, advise all guests to fly into Olbia. Catania is not relevant for Sardinia; they are separate islands with no road connection.
Costa Smeralda peak season pricing
The Costa Smeralda operates at the highest price point in Italy in July and August. Hotel rates, restaurant prices, and charter boat costs all reach maximum levels in this period. June and September are significantly cheaper and the sea is warm enough for swimming from early June. For cost-sensitive wedding budgets, a September date on the Costa Smeralda can represent a 25 to 40 per cent saving versus peak August pricing.
Nuraghe sites and archaeological landscape
Sardinia has over 7,000 nuraghe, the Bronze Age stone tower fortresses unique to the island. Su Nuraxi di Barumini, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Cagliari, is the largest and best-preserved complex. A nuraghe visit adds an experience to the wedding weekend that is genuinely unavailable anywhere else in the world. Most are accessible within a 30 to 60-minute drive from the main coastal resort zones.
Arzachena as the operational base for the Costa Smeralda
Porto Cervo is the glamorous centre of the Costa Smeralda but it is a resort development with limited practical infrastructure. Arzachena, 15 kilometres inland, is the functioning Gallura town: supermarkets, pharmacies, local restaurants, fuel, and the administrative offices relevant to marriage registration. Couples marrying legally in Sardinia register at the Comune di Arzachena. Your planner will confirm the exact municipal requirements for your nationality.
