Balmer Lawn Hotel: Weddings on the New Forest’s Open Lawn

The grass in front of Balmer Lawn Hotel is open New Forest grazing and the village cricket pitch. How that common ground, a heated pavilion and one wedding a day shape a Brockenhurst celebration.

Look out from the front of Balmer Lawn Hotel and the grass is not a hotel garden. It is Balmer Lawn itself, about 500 acres of open, low lying New Forest grazing on the northern edge of Brockenhurst, where commoners’ ponies graze and where, in front of the hotel, the village plays its cricket. Brockenhurst Cricket Club was founded in 1797 and has played on Balmer Lawn for more than 150 years. A wedding here is held on the edge of that common ground: vows in the Sylvan Pavilion in the hotel grounds, photographs with the Forest a step from the door, and no fireworks, a rule the hotel keeps to protect the Forest and its wildlife.

A lawn that belongs to the Forest

The ponies belong to commoners, local people who hold the centuries old legal right to graze animals on the open Forest. Each spring a commoner pays a marking fee for every animal turned out, and the agisters employed by the Verderers of the New Forest look after the welfare of the stock. On a wedding day the New Forest Code applies as it does to any visitor: keep your distance from the animals and do not feed or touch them. New Forest District Council has public spaces protection orders that ban feeding and petting ponies across restricted areas of the Forest.

The lawn gave the hotel its name, and the lawn’s own name is older than the building. Balmer is a distortion of Palmers Water, the name given in Comyn’s New Forest of 1817 to a small settlement east of the ford on the Brockenhurst to Beaulieu road that has long since disappeared. The water was the Lymington River, which separates Brockenhurst from the small settlement of Balmerlawn on the south side of the lawn. Woodland walks start at the hotel door, and each of the hotel’s wedding packages includes use of the grounds with direct access to the Forest for photography.

From hunting lodge to family hotel

The building began in the early nineteenth century as a private house or hunting lodge, too late to appear on Comyn’s maps of 1817, and was transformed into the present house later in the century, when it was known as The Holt. In the First World War Mrs Morant of Brockenhurst Park gave Balmer Lawn and its land to the war effort, and it formed part of the Lady Hardinge Hospital for wounded Indian soldiers in 1914 and 1915. From 1916 it was an officers’ site of the No. 1 New Zealand General Hospital, run by the New Zealand Medical Corps. In the Second World War it served as a headquarters for units in the area, latterly the 3rd Canadian Division.

A major fire in the early 1970s cost the hotel its original roof, which was replaced in the mansard style it wears today. After decades with hotel groups, Ladbroke among them, Balmer Lawn returned to private ownership in October 1997, and the Wilson family have owned it since. Chris and Alison Wilson remain hands on, working with the general manager, Tom Pyke. Beresfords, the hotel’s AA two rosette restaurant, is named after the proprietor’s father.

Vows in the Sylvan Pavilion

Balmer Lawn is licensed for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships for up to 140 guests, in indoor ceremony spaces or outdoors in the Sylvan Pavilion. The pavilion stands in a woodland setting within the hotel grounds and is licensed for outdoor civil ceremonies of the same size. It is covered and heated, lighting and a PA system are included for a ceremony, and if the weather is poor the ceremony can be arranged indoors instead.

Away from ceremonies, the pavilion is used for private dinners and drinks receptions in any season, and in the summer months it takes a barbecue or hog roast for larger functions. A couple marrying alone can take the Just the Two of Us package: a private ceremony space or the pavilion, the ceremony fees, witnesses if required, a Champagne reception, a three course wedding breakfast for two with wine chosen by the sommelier, a Champagne toast, a bouquet and buttonhole from Corbins Florist, and spa access.

The Beaulieu Suite, the Hamble Room and the evening

Only one wedding is held on any day. A couple can take exclusive use of the whole hotel, with all 54 bedrooms and every event space, or of the Beaulieu Suite, a private wing with its own bar and several rooms for the celebration. The Beaulieu Room is the largest event space in the hotel, light and flexible, one of a private suite of three with its own entrance, outdoor terrace and washrooms. The Hamble Room has a private entrance, its own bar and a terrace, and is used on its own or alongside the Beaulieu Suite.

Seated dinners take up to 120 guests, against 140 for the ceremony. Which room holds the evening sets how long it runs. In the Beaulieu Suite, celebrations usually end at midnight, and the general manager can approve an extension to 1am. Rooms at the front of the hotel lie beneath bedrooms, so parties there usually end at 10pm, or at 11pm if the wedding party has booked every bedroom above. In place of fireworks, laser and drone shows are welcome, and sparklers can be part of the night.

The kitchen and the wedding packages

Catering is in house. The head chef, Ben Brooks, cooks with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and the hotel grows its own herbs. The wedding menus take bird names. Just a Few of Us, for close family and friends, serves the three course Warbler menu with a reception drink, a half bottle of wine for each guest and a toast. Enchanted Forest serves the same menu with three canapés a guest and an evening barbecue, finger buffet or hog roast.

Everything but the Dress puts the day under one price: the ceremony fees, a Champagne reception, canapés, the three course Nightjar menu, wine, a Champagne toast, an evening barbecue or hog roast, the hotel’s enhanced styling and a first anniversary stay. It also brings in the suppliers: a photographer from Lightbox Studios or Sam Hudson Photography, a DJ from All Parties and Events, a three tier cake from The Pastry Corner in Netley, and bouquets, buttonholes and table flowers from Corbins Florist in Brockenhurst.

Each package includes a dedicated wedding executive from the first enquiry, a complimentary Honeymoon Suite and a menu tasting for two. On the day the conference and banqueting team, led by Kathryn, is on hand throughout.

Prices start at £5,500 for a midweek and winter package for 50 guests. It covers room hire for the ceremony, the wedding breakfast and the evening, a Prosecco reception, three canapés a guest and a two course fork buffet rather than a three course meal. The Hampshire wedding cost guide sets that figure beside the county’s other published prices.

From December 2026 to February 2027 the hotel offers a winter wedding package from £145 a head. A seasonal cocktail or mulled wine bar, a fire pit with hot chocolate and marshmallows when the weather allows, and seasonal styling can each be added to an existing wedding package at no extra cost.

Bedrooms, the spa and the train from Waterloo

With 54 bedrooms, many guests can stay in the hotel, and each room can be viewed online before it is booked. Reduced rates may be available for a wedding party, the couple’s room on the wedding night is complimentary, and the night before can be booked for getting ready. Hotels, guest houses and campsites nearby take any overflow. The packages include spa access for the couple at the New Forest Spa and Wellness Centre, where the therapists use ESPA products.

The hotel is on Lyndhurst Road. Brockenhurst station is a short walk away, about 0.8 miles in a straight line, with direct trains from London Waterloo, and a bus stops on the main road outside. Southampton and Bournemouth airports are each about 12 miles away as the crow flies. Parking is free for guests attending an event, with four fast electric vehicle chargers. Where the evening ends

Balmer Lawn puts open Forest at the front door and a heated pavilion in the grounds for the vows, with the whole wedding held in one family owned hotel. The decision that comes before the rest is which wing holds the evening: the Beaulieu Suite can run to midnight, and the rooms at the front cannot.
