Staying on after a London wedding: parks, museums and theatres

Parks, free museums, the City and the West End within walking distance of the London venues we list, for guests who stay on.

Most of the London venues we list are in Mayfair, Knightsbridge, the Strand, Holborn and the City, so guests who stay on can walk from the wedding hotel to a royal park, a free national museum or a West End theatre. A short list of what is near each venue, with walking times, saves guests planning their own days.

Parks beside the hotels

The Dorchester faces Hyde Park across Park Lane, and Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park has its own Royal Entrance on the park side. The Royal Parks give Hyde Park’s pedestrian gates as open from 5am to midnight, so a walk before breakfast is possible from either hotel.

The Ritz London stands on the edge of Green Park, and InterContinental London Park Lane is at Hyde Park Corner, opposite the Wellington Arch, between the two parks.

Museums

The Wallace Collection is a national museum in Hertford House on Manchester Square, seven minutes’ walk from Bond Street station on the Central, Jubilee and Elizabeth lines. The museum is open daily from 10am to 5pm, except 24 to 26 December, and entry to the permanent collection is free. Its paintings include Fragonard’s The Swing.

It is also a wedding venue, hired exclusively in the evening after closing, so guests at a Wallace wedding can come back by day to see the galleries where they had dinner.

In Bloomsbury, The Bloomsbury hotel on Great Russell Street is close to the British Museum, and Kimpton Fitzroy London fills one side of Russell Square.

Holborn and the City

At Gray’s Inn, The Walks are a five-acre private garden laid out in 1608 by Sir Francis Bacon, according to the Inn, and stained glass in the Hall dates from 1462. Because the gardens are private, ask the Inn whether guests can walk them on the days around the wedding.

Trinity House on Tower Hill faces Trinity Square Gardens and the Tower of London. St Olave’s in Hart Street is about 200 yards away and All Hallows by the Tower a short walk through the gardens, so the day after can be spent on Tower Hill and along the river. Check Tower of London opening times and tickets with Historic Royal Palaces before suggesting it to guests.

Theatre and the river

The Savoy stands on the Strand between Covent Garden and the Thames, overlooking Embankment Gardens, with Charing Cross Underground a four-minute walk. Guests staying there can walk to West End theatres and back without a car.

Late on Friday and Saturday, the Night Tube runs all night on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines, according to TfL. The London Wedding Atlas covers the city’s neighbourhoods and food in more depth.

Planning for guests who stay on

  • Send a one-page list of places near the wedding hotel with walking times, taken from the venue’s own location page.
  • Ask the hotel whether its group rate can cover the nights before and after the wedding.
  • For museums and attractions, give guests the official opening hours rather than a fixed plan: they change by season.

Questions couples ask

Is the Wallace Collection free to visit?

Yes. Entry to the permanent collection is free, and the museum says its venue-hire income helps keep it that way.

Which venues are closest to a royal park?

The Dorchester and Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park on Hyde Park, and The Ritz London on Green Park.
