Inn of Court with an Elizabethan hall and a five-acre garden · Holborn, London
5.01 reviewGray’s Inn is a working Inn of Court where couples wed beneath an Elizabethan Armada screen, then cross into historic five-acre gardens.
In the first-floor Hall at Gray’s Inn, couples say their vows beneath the Elizabethan Great Screen, traditionally believed to be carved from the timbers of the Nuestra Senora del Rosario, flagship of the Andalucian Squadron of the Spanish Armada. The Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn, at 8 South Square in Holborn, traces its origins to the de Grey family’s Manor of Purpoole and has trained barristers since before 1388. The Hall is largely unchanged since the time of Queen Elizabeth I, whose patronage marked the Inn’s sixteenth-century Golden Age. Stained-glass windows dating from 1462, including the South Oriel with the Coats of Arms of Queen Elizabeth II and the Prince of Wales, overlook The Walks, the gardens laid out in 1608 by Sir Francis Bacon.
The Hall in the Domus Building is the principal wedding space, used for wedding ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations. The Large Pension Room, also on the first floor of the Domus Building, hosts more intimate ceremonies and seated wedding breakfasts. The Walks, Gray’s Inn’s private gardens, sit beside the Domus Building and contain the contemporary summer marquee. The Landing on the first floor is used naturally for drinks receptions at smaller weddings, while the Benchers’ Library is kept as a private room for the couple or bridal party. Larger celebrations run through the Hall and adjacent first-floor rooms, while summer weddings can move between The Walks, the marquee and the historic interiors across the day.

The Hall within the Domus Building is licensed for weddings, so ceremonies take place beneath the Great Screen and stained glass. The Large Pension Room is also licensed for wedding ceremonies and suits smaller gatherings on the first floor. The Walks, Gray’s Inn’s private gardens, are licensed for outdoor weddings during the warmer months. There are three licensed ceremony spaces in total, including The Hall, the Large Pension Room and The Walks. Outdoor ceremonies in The Walks are possible for up to 250 guests.

The Large Pension Room on the first floor of the Domus Building, with its chandeliers and marble fireplace, takes a daytime reception or a smaller wedding breakfast. The Benchers' Library, with tall windows over Gray's Inn Square, takes a private lunch or dinner and serves as the couple's own room on the day.
The Walks are a five-acre private garden in central London, with lawns and tree-lined paths for the reception drinks and the photographs. In June and July a contemporary marquee stands there for the larger receptions, with air-cooling, a dance floor, restrooms, a feature bar and a terrace with a second bar. The Walks and the marquee can be taken on a dry-hire basis for couples who want to dress the interior themselves.

Catering at Gray's Inn is by Searcys, in residence since January 2025, a house founded by John Searcy in 1847. The menus are built on seasonal British produce from named suppliers, among them London Smoke and Cure salmon, Greyfriars English sparkling wine and Notes Coffee from east London, with Champagne and fine wines and menus for every dietary requirement.
