Heathrow is about 45 to 60 minutes from central London by car, according to the hotels we list, or 15 minutes to Paddington on the Heathrow Express, which runs every 15 minutes. Once guests are in town, most central venues are within a few minutes’ walk of an Underground station, so cars are needed mainly for the couple and anyone with luggage.

From the airports and Eurostar

Claridge’s gives Heathrow at about 50 minutes by car, Gatwick at about 1 hour 30 minutes and St Pancras International, for Eurostar, about 20 minutes by car or Underground. The Savoy gives Heathrow at under 50 minutes, Gatwick under 1 hour 40 minutes and London City under 45 minutes.

The Ritz London suggests the Heathrow Express to Paddington and then the Underground to Green Park, and from Gatwick the Gatwick Express to Victoria and the Victoria line. At Kimpton Fitzroy London on Russell Square, King’s Cross St Pancras is one stop on the Piccadilly line, Heathrow about 45 minutes by taxi or 55 by public transport, and London City about 30 minutes by taxi.

Outside the centre, The Chelsea Harbour Hotel puts Heathrow about 30 minutes by car and Gatwick about 45, with Imperial Wharf station two minutes’ walk away.

Cars and parking

Parking in central London is limited and charged. The Ritz offers valet parking at £50 for four hours or £75 per vehicle for 24 hours, and The Savoy valet parking from £22.50 for two hours, as published in their FAQs. Kimpton Fitzroy London has no on-site parking and points drivers to NCP car parks at Brunswick Square and Bloomsbury Square.

Plaisterers’ Hall has no parking, but the City of London car park on London Wall, almost opposite, charges £3 for the whole day on Saturdays and on Sundays after 1.30pm, according to the hall. Central London is in the Congestion Charge zone, which TfL lists at £18 a day, from 7am to 6pm on weekdays and 12pm to 6pm at weekends and on bank holidays.

For the couple, The Ritz hires out its Rolls-Royce Phantom with a chauffeur at £500 an hour in London, minimum two hours, plus a 10% hotel surcharge (official FAQs). Claridge’s and The Savoy arrange cars through the concierge.

The end of the night

Many central venues finish at midnight: Plaisterers’ Hall’s packages run from 12 noon to midnight. On Friday and Saturday nights, the Night Tube runs on the Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly and Victoria lines, according to TfL; on other nights, book cars or tell guests where to find taxis. The London Wedding Atlas covers airports and Eurostar for overseas guests in more detail.

Questions couples ask

Do we need a coach for guests?

Rarely, if guests stay near the venue: most central venues are a short walk from a station. A coach helps when the ceremony and reception are in different places or many guests are older.

Is there a Congestion Charge at weekends?

Yes. TfL charges between 12pm and 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, and from 7am to 6pm on weekdays.
