15th-century borgo below the Basilica of San Francesco · Assisi, Umbria
5.01 reviewA countryside borgo in Assisi where vows are exchanged in working gardens, with the Basilica di San Francesco as backdrop and mixology after dark.
Borgo Antichi Orti Assisi is a countryside villa and boutique borgo in Assisi, Umbria, set among its own Hortuli gardens with the Basilica di San Francesco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as its backdrop. Historic atmosphere sits alongside contemporary comfort. Weddings take place between vegetable gardens, lawns, pergolas and the inn, La Locanda, and the property also has a pool and a spa. Its residences turn a wedding into a wider retreat for guests, and the whole property can be taken for exclusive use. Catering is in house.
A wedding here can begin with a welcome dinner, which lets guests relax and mingle before the big day. The celebration moves on to a lively party with a mixology cocktail bar and music, with expert mixologists crafting cocktails to the couple's preferences, and a farewell brunch can close the celebrations and thank guests. Ceremony, reception and party all take place on the same property, without a change of venue. A dedicated wedding coordinator works with couples throughout the planning. The borgo keeps a list of trusted vendors, including photographers and florists, with whom it regularly collaborates, and couples may also bring their own vendors, subject to approval. Guidelines apply to decorations and music choices, to preserve the property's integrity and respect local regulations.

The Hortuli are the cultivated gardens of the borgo, and they include a dedicated area for banquets and ceremonies for up to 200 people. Vows can be exchanged amid lush greenery, vibrant flowers and the calm of nature, in an outdoor ceremony setting. If the weather turns, alternative indoor spaces can accommodate a ceremony or reception, and the team works with couples on a backup plan for a smooth transition.

The Pergola takes square, round or rectangular tables, and its large garden holds up to 150 people. In the garden the basilica forms a view on summer evenings at sunset. La Locanda seats guests inside for a wedding reception, with an aperitif possible in the front yard. The lawn is a place where locals come in the afternoon for an aperitif. In the evening, guests can celebrate in the gardens under the stars, with ample room for dining and for making cherished memories.

Room categories are Standard, Superior Double, Deluxe Double, Junior Suite, Classic Suite and Garden Suite. Standard rooms are large and bright, Superior Doubles are cosy, the Deluxe Double is a double room, and the Junior, Classic and Garden suites are spacious. The residences each have a strong personality in furnishings and details, created with care for environmental sustainability and the link with the territory. The borgo sleeps 37 guests.

La Locanda serves humble and precious cuisine, revisiting the ancient tradition of local cooking with produce from the gardens. Lab Botanico, the bar and tasting space, brings music, tastings and Signature Cocktails. Seated and buffet meals are both offered, an alcohol licence is held, and menus are customisable, with experienced chefs creating local and international dishes to suit taste and dietary requirements.
