A long lunch among the Amalfi lemons: food, wine and where

How to plan a lemon-terrace lunch: the protected local produce, which terraces to use, timing and shade, and a walk on the Path of the Lemons.

A long lunch on a shaded terrace is the easy day of an Amalfi Coast weekend, and the table can be built almost entirely from produce with a protected name: the Limone Costa d’Amalfi IGP, the Costa d’Amalfi DOC wines, buffalo mozzarella from Campania and the colatura di alici anchovy essence of Cetara. Start at about 1pm, under cover, and let it run into the afternoon.

What goes on the table

The coast’s lemon is the sfusato amalfitano, long and pointed, with a thick, fragrant peel; it is protected as Limone Costa d’Amalfi IGP. It turns up in everything from raw fish and pasta to the delizia al limone, a lemon-cream sponge, and the cold limoncello that closes the meal.

The wines come from the same slopes. The Costa d’Amalfi DOC has three named sub-zones, Furore, Ravello and Tramonti, and a lunch is a good place to pour a white from one of them with fish and a red with anything grilled.

Where to hold it

A working lemon grove is private farmland, so a lunch in one needs the owner’s agreement and a caterer who can work without a kitchen. A venue terrace among the trees is simpler and gives you shade, toilets and a plan for rain.

Palazzo Suriano offers a choice of three local caterers, from traditional Campanian to creative, and lays its covered terrace with hand-painted Vietri ceramics. At Hotel Raito, the Agrumeto terrace sits among citrus and orange trees, with wrought-iron tables inlaid with Vietri tiles, and the hotel runs a grill and pizzeria by the pool from May to September.

Villa La Rondinaia in Ravello is planted with olives, lemons and vine pergolas across 2.5 hectares of terraces, and its own restaurant, NEXST, cooks with Campanian produce. For a small wedding party it is lunch at home.

Timing and shade

In July and August the midday sun on a south-facing coast is fierce, so a pergola, a sail or a covered terrace is not optional. Start late enough that guests arriving by boat or car do not rush, and serve the main course after 2pm, when appetites have caught up.

Tell guests the dress code: relaxed, flat shoes for terraces and steps, something to cover shoulders.

A walk before lunch

The Sentiero dei Limoni, the old path through the lemon terraces between Minori and Maiori, makes a good morning before a lunch nearby. Travelmar sells a Salerno to Minori or Maiori and back ticket for the walk, EUR 20 full price in 2026, and Amalfi to Minori by boat takes ten minutes. More on the coast’s food is in the Amalfi Coast Wedding Atlas.

Questions couples ask

Which day suits the lunch?

The day before the wedding, if you want guests rested for the evening, or the day after as a gentler farewell than a brunch.

Can the venue’s caterer do the lunch as well as the wedding?

Usually, and it keeps one team responsible for both days. Ask for a lunch menu that does not repeat the wedding dinner.

Is limoncello served at lunch?

By tradition it closes the meal, served very cold. Have water and coffee on the table too.
