Planning a welcome dinner on the Amalfi Coast

Hold the welcome dinner in the town where most guests are sleeping, start it before sunset, and book the ride home before you book the table. On the Amalfi Coast the last point decides the rest: on Travelmar’s timetable from 7 September 2026, the last scheduled ferry from Amalfi to Salerno leaves at 19:10 and the last from Positano at 18:30, so any dinner by the sea ends with a private boat or a car.

Choose the town before the restaurant

Most guests arrive on the day of the dinner, many after a flight into Naples Capodichino and a drive of around 90 minutes to Positano or Ravello. The dinner should be a short walk or a short drive from their beds, not a second journey on the SS163 coast road. If your venue sleeps the whole party, hold it there; if not, hold it where the hotel rooms are.

At the eastern end of the coast, Vietri sul Mare keeps distances short. Palazzo Suriano sets long tables under a pergola strung with lights, and its nine bedrooms put the closest guests a staircase away. Hotel Raito, less than half a kilometre away as the crow flies in the hamlet of Raito, has 77 rooms and its own restaurant, Il Golfo.

Time it to the light

Sunset on this coast falls at around 8.30pm in late June, about 7.15pm in mid-September and around 6.30pm in mid-October, before the clocks go back on 25 October 2026. Ask guests for half an hour before sunset, serve drinks while the light goes, and sit down as it fades.

For a small wedding at Villa La Rondinaia below Ravello, the dinner can stay inside the house party. The villa is booked by one party at a time, sleeps 12, and has its own restaurant, NEXST, under executive chef Enrico Ruggiero, with terraces that look along the coast from Minori to Capo d’Orso.

Plan the journey home first

A dinner in another town needs a return plan agreed before the invitations go out. By sea, that means a private boat booked for the return time, not just the outward trip. By road, it means cars with drivers who know the SS163 after dark, booked for a fixed pick-up.

Ravello has its own version of the problem. La Rondinaia is reached on foot from Piazza Duomo, through a short pedestrian tunnel and about 350 metres past a private gate, so ask the villa how the route is lit and where cars can wait.

What to agree with the venue

Questions couples ask

Should we invite every guest to the welcome dinner?

If most guests have travelled, inviting all of them is the simplest choice and spreads the conversations across two evenings. A small dinner for family, with drinks for everyone afterwards, also works when numbers outgrow the room.

Can guests take the ferry to a dinner in another town?

Only one way. On the autumn 2026 timetable the last Travelmar departures towards Salerno leave Positano at 18:30 and Amalfi at 19:10, before most dinners begin, so the return has to be by private boat or car.

What if it rains?

Choose a venue with an indoor room that holds the whole party, and agree with the venue who makes the weather call and when.
