A Tuscan wedding plan B works only if the indoor or covered space holds your full guest list for each part of the day: the ceremony, the drinks, the dinner and the dancing. Of the Tuscan venues on 5 Star Weddings, three publish an indoor space large enough for their full dinner numbers, three publish indoor spaces smaller than their outdoor ones, and the rest have not published a plan. This guide sets out what each has said, so you know what to ask before you sign.
How to read a plan B
Compare two numbers for every part of the day: the guests the outdoor space takes, and the guests the fallback takes. If the second is lower than your list, the plan B is a marquee, a split between rooms or a smaller wedding.
Ask too whether the fallback is held for you or shared, whether it costs extra, and who decides on the day and by when. None of our Tuscan venues has yet published when the weather call is made.
Venues where the indoor space matches the guest list
- Relais La Costa, near Siena: the Salone delle Feste is the stated plan B, at no extra charge, for up to 60. Dinner is held there anyway, and 60 is the venue’s maximum, so the whole day can move inside.
- Valle di Badia, near Pisa: I Granai, the converted granaries by the pool, seat up to 200 under cover, the same as the venue’s top figure. La Greppia is roofed for drinks. The venue does not publish a covered setting for the ceremony by the lake.
- The St. Regis Florence: the Salone delle Feste, a frescoed ballroom, takes up to 250 for a banquet or a cocktail reception, so the main event is indoors from the start.

Venues where indoor numbers are lower
Villa Il Cerretino, near Prato, hosts weddings of up to 250 in its gardens and says its indoor rooms take up to 180, including a glazed Winter Garden, heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer. For a wedding of 180 or fewer, dinner can move inside at full size; above that, ask what happens.
Castel Monastero, near Castelnuovo Berardenga, gives the clearest figures. Its fact sheet lists:
- Ceremony: La Piazza or the spa garden for up to 150; the Ombrone Room for up to 90, or the Ombrone Room and Library together for up to 120.
- Drinks: La Piazza or the pool for up to 150; the Bar Chigi and Library for up to 90.
- Dinner: La Piazza for up to 150; the Ombrone Room and Library for up to 120, or the Cantina restaurant for up to 110.
A dinner of more than 110 on the piazza already needs a marquee, so for a wedding of 150 the marquee is plan A, and its cost belongs in the budget from the start.

Castello di Velona, near Montalcino, holds ceremonies of up to 250 on its five terraces and names its historic halls for wedding dinners, but it has not published how many they seat. The only indoor room with a stated capacity is the Barrique Meeting Room, for up to 70. For a large wedding here, the indoor plan needs confirming in writing.
Venues that have not published a plan
Castello di Casole says a marquee can be added to the Limonaia Terrace and lists indoor spaces including the San Tommaso Chapel, which seats 40, and the Library. Borgo Bucciano says it has indoor areas ready for bad weather without naming them. Villa Mangiacane and Villa Castiglione have not published an indoor alternative.
None of these is a warning sign, but each answer needs to be in writing.
Marquees
Where the plan B is a marquee, settle three things early: whether it is booked for the date regardless of the forecast, what it costs and who supplies it, and whether it comes with sides, flooring, lighting and heating. A marquee booked only if rain is forecast may not be available at short notice.
The questions to ask
- Where does each part of the day move to, and how many does each space seat?
- Is the fallback space reserved for us, and is there any extra charge?
- If the plan B is a marquee, is it included, and is it booked in advance?
- When is the weather decision made, and who makes it?
- Do the photographer and florist know both layouts?

Questions couples ask
Does it rain at Tuscan weddings in summer?
Summer is the driest part of the year, but storms do happen, and spring and autumn are wetter. Every venue needs a plan B whatever the month.
Is a marquee a real plan B?
Yes, if it is booked, priced and sized for your full list in advance. It is a weak one if it depends on availability on the day.
Which part of the day is hardest to move?
Usually the ceremony. Several of our venues publish an indoor dinner space but no covered ceremony setting, so ask about the ceremony first.
